Hello from Vanguard

Hello! I'm Stuart, and I'm representing Wikia's Vanguard team. We're users who volunteer to help communities adopt to new technologies and features, like content portability. We've identified your community as a high priority for introducing the Portable Infobox tool, which has a lot of benefits for your community. Rather than get into all of the metrics and numbers (though I can present some of those if you're interested), I'll keep it simple; I'd like upgrade your current Infobox templates so that they can be accessible on any current and future platform. Maintaining them if you want to make changes in future should be very simple.

I'm going to add some drafts of Infoboxes in Special:Insights/nonportableinfoboxes, which you can modify or approve early if you'd like. There are guides and resources on the Portability Hub for the structure and styles that can help you modify them. Everything should work properly as set up, so if we don't hear back from you, we'll assume there were no problems and will come back and approve the work as-is on or after July 16.

Also, if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. Thanks!--TwoTailedFox (talk) 08:49, July 9, 2016 (UTC)

Well, the aim of the new system is to ensure that your content looks the same across a whole range of devices, both desktop and mobile. If Wild created your infoboxes, he's naturally going to be a little biased. We think that this new system is easier to code, and it has already been adopted by a number of high-profile wikis.--TwoTailedFox (talk) 07:15, July 23, 2016 (UTC)

Re: Infoboxes + Split Articles Question

They're known as "Portable Infoboxes". Basically, they're infoboxes that are made to show up on mobile devices (since others apparently don't) and are "easier to code" or something like that. Allow me to quote what TwoTailedFox told you:

This is not what we're going for here. If we do this, then it defeats the purpose of whoever created infoboxes such as {{Mobian}} and {{Echidna}} being different colors in order to identify the type of species the article is covering, because all of the portable infoboxes would, like TTF said, "look the same". But we want our infoboxes looking different across articles, no?
Not to mention, if we go ahead with this we would have to go back across thousands of articles replacing the infoboxes, which would be a lot of work, given we're still not completely done with splitting up articles in the first place (even articles that are already split need some work - which I'll explain later).
Basically, such portable infoboxes remove our ability to customize infoboxes as we see fit (for instance, notice how the Parent Tab template is color-coded to match the respective infobox in this article? Couldn't do that to the same effect with the portable infoboxes). Yes, the portable infoboxes may indeed be "easier to code", however, it basically will remove our customization of infoboxes. I work on Narutopedia as well (another high-profile wiki), and they also have their own infoboxes (SemanticMediaWiki infoboxes), and they weren't fans of the portable infoboxes idea either, given using them would remove all of the useful and special functions the SMW infoboxes have there. But if you want to go ahead with this, I would also want to ask the community what they think about it as well (which I wanted to do in the new forums, but ugh, they don't work here yet). EDIT: wouldn't be that much work to replace the infoboxes, but we'd still lose a lot of customization nonetheless.
Regarding how articles like Mobius and Sonic's World are linked together without having the same base page name, yes I do know, as I'm the one that created that function. It's the custom1 and custom2 features I made in the Parent Tab template, if you look carefully. WindStar7125 14:28, July 23, 2016 (UTC)

Technically, I don't want the new portable infoboxes. They'd make all infoboxes look the same, which is not really what we want to do.

Regarding article splitting with different names, I'm not sure how I can explain it any simpler than this^... ^__^ Simply use "custom1=" and "custom2=" in the Parent Tab Template. Would pictures specifically pointing out how it's done explain it better? WindStar7125 05:11, August 24, 2016 (UTC)
I'm on it.~ EDIT: Fixed it.~ WindStar7125 05:20, August 24, 2016 (UTC)
Still use title (i.e. don't remove title), and just add custom. Also, can I test something on your talkpage? Since, your talkpage is quite long, I was thinking about archiving it. WindStar7125 05:42, August 24, 2016 (UTC)
Tested out the archive feature on your talkpage. It works! :D
For future reference, simply click the dropdown arrow next to the "Edit" button on the top right of your talkpage and click "Archive" in the dropdown menu. After that, you can select what you want to archive and click the "Save archive" button. WindStar7125 05:49, August 27, 2016 (UTC)
