Uma Arachnis was a Mobian spider ninja and a secret agent of the Gossamer Clan, who after winding up in the Zone of Silence became an ally to the wizard Ixis Naugus. Uma remained in the Zone of Silence for an unknown period of time following her mysterious exile to that realm, before finally emerging with Naugus and Warlord Kodos following the death of Dr. Ivo Robotnik. She and Kodos were imprisoned at Devil's Gulag for a time after being trapped in crystal form, but were then liberated by Robo Robotnik's satellites. The pair briefly worked with other criminals before becoming a separate team. Uma turned on Kodos when she learned the latter no longer needed her after obtaining the Sword of Acorns, thus she stole and hid the sword. Uma eventually died due to prolonged exposure to toxic radiation pollution from living under the city of Robotropolis, though not before laying a half dozen eggs that later hatched into the Arachne.
Ninja of the Gossamer Clan
Uma was originally a ninja of the Gossamer Clan in the Dragon Kingdom, and the most gifted student of the Bride of the Endless Reach. So great were her abilities that many believed that she would replace her mentor as leader of the clan. A gifted reader of the Web of Fate, she learned that the Source of All would fall into the clutches of evil. Upon learning of this, she set out to personally destroy the Source of All and its related relics. (SU: #13, CSE)
Soldier of Ixis Naugus
Making her way to the Zone of Silence at an unknown time and for unknown reasons, Uma Arachnis was among the many exiles to the Zone who swore allegiance to Ixis Naugus in exchange for his magical protection, the others including Maximillian Acorn, Warlord Kodos, and Feist. Granted the ability to shift between organic and crystalline form, Uma could become an even more formidable opponent and was able to retain her sanity while in the Zone. She was present when Dr. Robotnik came to the Zone and was brought before Naugus and his other minions by Feist. (StH: #53, #66, #234)
Eventually, she escaped alongside Naugus and Kodos after the Knothole Freedom Fighters dispatched a probe into the Zone, and at Naugus' behest battled the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog and Geoffrey St. John. During the fight, Uma attempted to pull King Max off his sick bed and shatter him, as his body was mostly crystal, but was stopped by St. John. When Naugus realized his enemies proved too much for her and Kodos, Naugus transformed them both into their crystal forms, making both virtually indestructible. Sonic quickly brought an end to her attack, however, by shattering Naugus' crystal sceptre, ending the magic that allowed her to move while crystallized. She and Kodos were then moved in their immobile forms to Devil's Gulag, abandoned by their supposed benefactor. (StH: #53, #54)
Joining Snively and the Convicts
When a blast from one of Robo-Robotnik's satellites allowed the prisoners of Devil's Gulag - Snively Kintobor, Sleuth Dog, Drago Wolf, Nack the Weasel, and the Fearsome Foursome - to escape, they brought Kodos and Uma along with them. By unknown means the two were reanimated and restored to their original forms. Swearing loyalty to Snively, the leader of the group, they joined the others in kidnapping Nate Morgan, whose technical genius Snively hoped to use in his takeover attempt. They fought with the Knothole Freedom Fighters at Deer John's in Mobotropolis, and were able to defeat them and take Nate hostage. Uma would then fight the Royal Secret Service briefly after they came to Nate's rescue, but managed to escape with Kodos on Sonic's stolen biplane, Winged Victory. (StH: #63, #68, #69, #70)
- It is assumed it was the work of Robo-Robotnik's satellites that restored Kodos and Uma Arachnies to their organic selves. However, this was never officially confirmed in the comics, and it is possible it was due to Naugus' magics wearing off due to him being trapped in the Zone of Silence.
Quest for the Sword and Death
Some time later, Uma and Kodos found themselves fighting against one another, both becoming deranged and terminally ill due to the toxic effects of prolonged exposure to radiation poisoning in Robotropolis. While Uma took the Sword of Acorns from Robotropolis and gave it to Kodos, Uma later stole it back from him while he slept, as he suggested with the sword he would no longer need her. (StH: #93)
Uma managed to hide the sword, but Kodos continued to chase and attack her. She managed to catch Sonic in her web and use him as bait to lure in Kodos, which she successfully did, knocking him unconscious. After this, she cut Sonic from the webbing and allowed him to take Kodos back to Knothole while she vanished. Unknown to Sonic, Uma had just laid her eggs in a nearby tree. After this she took this time to hide the Sword, realizing that she could not allow it to fall into the wrong hands. (StH: #95)
A few days later, Uma was once again attacked by Kodos, who escaped after being briefly treated in Knothole's hospital for his own radiation poisoning. Uma, succumbing to the toxic effects of radiation poisoning from when she was hiding in Robotropolis, was no match for Kodos. Before she died however, Uma managed to tell Princess Sally where she had hidden the Sword of Acorns. Uma died shortly afterwards from the radiation poisoning and wounds obtained from Kodos. (StH: #99, #100)
Uma was a skilled martial artist and professional ninja, mastering the skills of stealth and various weapons. While working for Ixis Naugus, Uma could also turn herself into crystal, becoming nearly invulnerable. She could also use webbing to trap opponents. (StH: #53, #95)
- After much debate, it was shown in SU #13 that Uma Arachnis was a member of the Gossamer Clan.
- Uma's last name is a pun on the term for a spider, "Arachnid." Her first name is also one of the identities of the Hindu goddess Parvati.
- The identity of Uma's husband or partner, and thus the father of the Arachne, was never revealed, nor is it known how she came to be in the Zone of Silence in the first place.
