Source of All

Sally entering the Source of All

The "Source of All" is an omnipotent and sentient substance that created the universe and supplies all the cosmic matter necessary to create the base material for life and everything else. The Source, as a result, exists in everyone and everything in the universe, but not in any degree noticeable. If a significant amount of pure Source is collected in one place (or groups together naturally), it can produce and channel vast amounts of magical energy.

History[]

Discovery[]

A pool of pure Source of All was discovered by Julius Acorn as he expanded the territory of the Kingdom of Acorn. Julius began the tradition of the heirs of the House of Acorn bonding with the Source of All, and using the runoff from the process to craft a sword and crown that each would carry throughout his reign. His son Romulus Acorn later relocated Mobotropolis to the site of the Source pool, and had the histories altered to hide the details of its discovery so as to bring a mystic association to his line. These kings also introduced worship of the Source by the denizens of the kingdom, though in time it dwindled to primarily the House of Acorn itself. (CSE)

Bonding[]

At every Acorn heir's 10th commemoration, the member was guided by their predecessor to wade into the nexus pool of Source matter located in a secret chamber at the lowest level of Castle Acorn in Mobotropolis, where they bonded with the Source for life. The Source also determines who the member's spouse should be, and provides council to the family's members during times of crisis, much like it did for King Max during the Great War, though it made Sally Acorn consider rejecting the bonding outright as she did not want the Source making decisions for her. Sally was unable to bond with the source due to Robotnik's Coup d'état, though Robotnik himself was unable to find the pool throughout his occupation of the city, during which it was renamed Robotropolis. (StH: #58, #60, CSE)

After much talk with her brother, Elias—now named King Max's successor—Sally went ahead and made the attempt to bond with the Source of All—and rejected it before completion; however, it had not rejected Sally. (StH: #110, SSS: #11)

During the reign of King Frederick Acorn, after Maximillian's immersion, he directed his son to drain the residual Source matter attached to his body into a molding furnace, where it was then forged into two royal artifacts for use by the current monarch. During Dr. Ivo Robotnik's military takeover of Mobius, access to the pool was cut off with the founding of Robotropolis and the artifacts scattered across Mobius. However, with time, the artifacts were retrieved and, following Robotnik's death at the hands of Sonic the Hedgehog, access to the pool was available once again-until Dr. Eggman took the city. (StH: #56, #58, #75)

Decline and Destruction[]

This changed following Robotropolis's destruction by Station Square's O.T.I.S. defense computer. The pool, containing the largest concentration of the pure Source matter, was permanently rendered inaccessible due to the nuclear blast—the contents of the pool were instantly evaporated. Only Max's royal artifacts survived the disaster. (StH: #110, CSE)

Contact with the Source was cut off completely when the artifacts, while initially remaining and used to great effect by the Kingdom of Acorn's champions, were individually destroyed. The Sword and Crown of Acorns were eventually destroyed by Sir Connery's suicide attack using the Sword of Light when the artifact's Source matter was corrupted by the harsh Chaos energies of Mammoth Mogul. (StH: #163, #164)

Background Information[]

  • Cancelled storylines after issue #134 would have the Source of All reforming in an underground grotto within the eastern mountains and would have revealed that it had been corrupted by Naugus before he was banished back into the Zone of Silence. Thus, the corrupted Source controlled by Naugus himself would first seek to control and eventually take host of King Max's body, (and escaping the Zone of Silence as a result) due to the Crown of Acorns being related to the Source and is worn by Max. Antoine would also be corrupted by the Source as he bonds with it by the Source enticing him, and would not let Antoine go until Sally (who had previously immersed herself but rejected the Source) would fully bond with the Source, falling under its sway and use Antoine and Sally as puppet rulers preventing the future shown in the Sonic In Your Face Special from ever occurring. An order called "the Strand" composed of spiders was thought of as the protectors of the Source, and the entire order would have also fallen prey to the Source's desires, revealing also that the late Uma Arachnis was a member of it. Sonic would then eventually destroy the Crown of Acorns and Max would return to normal with Naugus banished back to the zone in turn. Of course, this plotline has been abandoned, although an order of spider ninjas similar to the Strand was later introduced: the Gossamer Clan.
  • Ian Flynn commented on the "destruction" of the Source of All and the artifacts stemming from it. Flynn said, "The Source of All that was in the goopy pool and what made up the Sword/Crown of Acorns were "pure" samples of the stuff. 99.9% of the Source had become matter or energy in the conventional sense. Now, matter can neither be created no destroyed, simply changed. So when the original pool was nuked with the rest of Robotropolis, it was converted to energy and joined the rest of the ambient energies that make up Creation. In the form of the Sword and Crown, they became conduits of magic power. Not so much the "pure Source" as items with enhanced properties due to their make-up. They were corrupted with Mogul's dark will and destroyed by Sir Connery's light magic via the Sword of Light. Effectively, the Sword and Crown were "nuked" like the pool. It's all a moot point, really, since there is no more "pure" Source of all to worry about." (1)
