Sonic Free Comic Book Day 2008 is the second Free Comic Book Day issue. It is a reprint of Sonic the Hedgehog #1.

Summary[]

Official Solicitation[]

Sonic the Hedgehog has been speeding his way through video games, TV, and comic books since 1992! He is undoubtedly one of the biggest cultural icons throughout the world. Now, Archie Comics is paying homage to the blue blur by taking us back to where it all began. With the overwhelming success and popularity of the Sonic Archives reprint series, we are proud to bring you a reprint of the first-ever Sonic comic from the ongoing series: Sonic The Hedgehog #1! In honor of this year's Free Comic Book Day, Archie is re-releasing the classic stories from this prized issue, but with a special bonus: the cover will be completely re-imagined with a modern "spin" by current Sonic artist, SPAZ!

Story One[]

"Meet Me at the Corner of Hedgehog and Vine" - Part One

Dr. Ivo Robotnik is enraged with his arch-nemises Sonic the Hedgehog and makes a pinata that looks like him, attacking it. Robotnik is ashamed that he is so baffled by Sonic, seeing what he has been reduced to, by hitting a pinata. Just a Crabmeat starts cheering for Robotnik, a SWATbot brings in a "plant" for Robotnik. Robotnik is furious, and beats the SWATbot for breaking one of his laws (no plants). The damaged SWATbot explains to Robotnik that this plant, known as the Krudzu, is a special plant that can be used against Sonic and his friends. After comand, Burrobot goes off to the Great Forest to plant the "seeds" of the Krudzu. Meanwhile, Sonic and Princess Sally Acorn are discussing team strategy, while one of their teammates, Antoine D'Coolette runs off to the Great Forest, to find some flowers, to try and win Princess Sally's heart. Unfortunatly, he is snatched by the evil Krudzu plant, but fortunatly, Sonic and Sally hear Antoine's cries for help, and rush up to help him.

"Meet Me at the Corner of Hedgehog and Vine" - Part Two

Sonic rescues Antoine with a Sonic Spin, and takes him down to Freedom HQ with Sally. The duo bring Antoine to Rotor's (the team's scientist) examination table to try and help Antoine. Rotor scares Antoine with a chainsaw (making him pass out, in fright), only to cut off a bit of the table. While Antoine is passed out, Sonic, Sally and Rotor rip the plant off of him and throw it into a bucket. Afterwards, Antoine wakes up, but Tails (another teammate) doesn't know about the evil plant, and decides to water it. The team are all in shock of what will happen next. Suprisingly, the plant doesn't grow, it explodes. The Krudzu then turns out to be a robotic plant, which short-circuited when Tails watered it. Sonic assumes that the whole forrest is covered with the plant, and thinks he'll need a huge water hose to short-circuit them all. As it turns out, the forcast states that there is a 95% chance of severe thunderstorms, which will take out the plant, completely. Robotnik is furious by this, and throws Burrobot into the robot disposal.

Story Two[]

"You Bet my Life!" - Part One

The Knothole Freedom Fighters all call Sonic into home base, to which he thinks that there is a big problem. First, Sally asks Sonic to get the map of Mobius straight. Second, Rotor tells Sonic that Robotnik has decided to make a speech at Casino Night Zone. Sonic rushes off to Robotnik's casino Renobotnik and infiltrates it. He arrives at the auditorium to hear Robotnik's speech, but instead he is hit in the head by an Orbinaut.

"You Bet my Life!" - Part Two

Sonic is knocked out, and taken into a huge pinball machine, by a SWATbot. Sonic is also trapped inside a small pinball, and is shot like one, by Robotnik. Sonic hits the middle button, inside the pinball machine, and survives 20,000 watts and falls back to the bottom. Robotnik nearly shoots Sonic back up again, but is distracted by someone who won at a game. Robotnik goes off to beat the robot (the rules of the casino are, "if the house beats you, you get beaten by a hammer") Sonic can't use a Sonic Spin, but instead uses his spikes to cut the pinball good enough. When Robotnik returns, he puts Sonic back into the machine, but the pinball surrounding Sonic breaks. Sonic smashes the pinball machine, attacks Robotnik and blows up his Casino. When Sonic returns to Freedom HQ, Sally asks Sonic to do another minor task: get a childproof cap off a bottle.

Background Information[]

  • The issue was released in the same month as the Archie Sonic comic series' 15th anniversary.
  • Although the actual issue was identical to the first Sonic the Hedgehog comic, the cover art was changed to give the characters their updated looks. As well, many of the poses on the cover were changed to match their current personas (Sally bravely facing down Badniks instead of panicking, for example).
