Doctor Eggman has managed to capture Sonic with the help of Metal Sonic. Eggman gloats over his victory, while Sonic mentions to Dr. Eggman that it was Metal Sonic that did all the work. Being a bit disappointed at this, Eggman gets out a device and tells Sonic that if he disapproves of using a robot, he'll use the real thing instead. In Knothole, Sally organizes the Freedom Fighters and plans to bust Sonic out of New Megaopolis, who she saw being dragged there by Metal Sonic. Sally begins to divide the team into groups, with Rotor and NICOLE to monitor, Antoine and Bunnie for offensive support and Tails and Sally breaking Sonic out. Fortunately, Sonic returns with the device stuck in his ear. Being controlled by Dr. Eggman, Sonic attacks Bunnie along with the rest of the Freedom Fighters. Sonic, still having control over his thoughts, tells Sally that his next target is the king. Sally uses NICOLE to call the one person that can take Sonic down. Using the device, Eggman gets into contact with Sonic, mad at Sonic blabbing about his plans. Sonic quickly pointing out that Eggman may control his body, but not his mind, and promising he'll do anything he can to stop him.
As Sonic arrives at Castle Acorn, he stopped by Vector, Espio, Mighty, Ray, Charmy, Saffron and Julie-Su. Sonic tells them that they won't do any better than the Freedom Fighters and attacks them. Sonic overpowers the Chaotix and defeats them all, while apologising to them. As he's about to enter the castle, Dr. Eggman brags that no one can stop him now, until Sonic is punched by Knuckles. Sonic asks who can stop him, with Knuckles questioning if Sonic was expecting Shadow. Sonic and Knuckles being evenly matched, Sonic tells Knuckles that Dr. Eggman has put some kind of neuro-controller in his ear. Eggman yells at Sonic through the device while Sonic is explaining he has no control to Knuckles. Knuckles sees this as a chance to provide Sonic enough blunt force to the head to destroy the controller. Knuckles smiling that he'll do it for Sonic, but crashes into the castle by Sonic's whirlwind spin.
At Dr. Eggman's base, Dr. Eggman with a controller is being watched by Snively. Snively seeing this as not going well, Eggman points out that "the controls are horrendous and he should've spent more time developing it". Snively going away from Eggman sees this as a chance to control Metal Sonic, but is stopped by an activated Metal Sonic. Eggman in the background states that everything in the city is programmed to watch him to prove his loyalty. Eggman sends Snively to organise the Egg Fleet, while he and Metal Sonic head to Knothole (Sonic being on auto-brawl).
Sonic rejecting Knuckles' offer of punching him in the head takes the fight into Castle Acorn. Knuckles shouting at him to stop being such a a baby, Sonic avoiding his attempts. Tails enters from above and stuns Sonic apologising on impact. Knuckles charging up his fist launches it at Sonic that nearly takes his head off. The Freedom Fighters and Chaotix enter the castle and Sally yells at Knuckles that it nearly took his head off. Sonic still dizzy shoves his ear and the remains of the device falls out. Sonic thanks Knuckles, but Sonic, Tails and Knuckles are confronted by Dr Eggman in his Egg-O-Matic with Metal Sonic. Dr Eggman thinking that they are all tired out sends Metal Sonic to capture them and to use their bodies to control. Sonic, Tails and Knuckles easily take down Metal Sonic, Eggman in rage points a gun at Sonic. Sonic points out where he is, surrounded by the Freedom Fighters and Chaotix, Eggman flees.
Sonic thanks everyone for their help that he can always count on his friends and the Chaotix to back him up. Sonic saying that Knuckles seemed to like punching him in the ear, Knuckles innocently saying that Sonic was probably just imagining it. Back at Dr Eggman's base, Eggman has decided that it's time to settle the score and orders Snively to finish the Egg Fleet while he prepares the Ultimate Weapon (STH: 175).
- Dr. Eggman: Gya-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! At long last! Sonic the Hedgehog is my captive!
- Sonic: Meh. You've caught me before. I'll be out of here in no time.
- Knuckles: In that case, I bet enough blunt force to your head would break the device!
- Sonic: [Nervous] Erm, yeah... I don't want to test that.
- Knuckles: [Smiling] Oh, don't worry. I'll do it for you, buddy.
- Sonic: And what if it dosen't work after one hit?
- Knuckles: Then we'll try some more!
- Sally: [Yelling] Knuckles! You nearly took his head off!
- Knuckles: But... The thing in his head... I'm sure it broke...?
- Sonic: Although Knuckles seemed to like his part more than was necessary.
- Knuckles: What? No! You're imagining things!
- Sonic is captured by Metal Sonic and brought back to Dr. Eggman.
- Eggman implants a device in Sonic's ear, allowing him to control Sonic.
- Sonic is defeated by Knuckles with some small help from Tails.
- The device in Sonic's ear is destroyed, as is Metal Sonic when he invades Knothole.
- The plot in this issue is somewhat similar to episode 24 of Sonic X, where Sonic accidentally gets the micro-chip of a robot stuck in his ear and ends up running non-stop when a garage door opener activates it.
Cameos and References
- Eggman laments that "the controls are terrible - should have spent more time in development". This is likely a nod to the game Sonic The Hedgehog (2006), which was widely criticized for its poor controls, among many other things.
