New Megaopolis was the capital city of the Eggman Empire. In late 3237 it was reduced to rubble by the Second Enerjak, leaving only the Eggdome functioning. Some time after this, the ruins of the city became the temporary capital city of the Iron Dominion after it usurped the Eggman Empire. The ruins were destroyed after the launching of the Death Egg Mark 2.
Birth of the Eggman Empire
With the destruction of Robotropolis, Dr. Eggman relocated his operations to the abandoned city of Old Megaopolis and began construction of a new artificial shell. Learning what Eggman was up to, the President of Station Square dispatched Rouge the Bat to deal with the situation but was captured. The President then sought out the help of Sonic the Hedgehog and Bunnie Rabbot to complete the mission and rescue her. (StH: #116)
During Sonic's long absence in space, Eggman expanded his territory and effectively created the Eggman Empire, with New Megaopolis as its capital city. New Megaopolis was the location of Dr. Eggman's Infiltrator factory. Learning of its location, the Knothole Freedom Fighters traveled to the city, infiltrated the factory and destroyed it, along with the Infiltrators. (StH: #130, #137)
Decimation by Enerjak
After being captured by Eggman, Knuckles, who had recently become Enerjak, destroyed the city when he escaped from the Egg Grape Chambers. He proceeded to lay waste to Eggman's robotic army, destroying ninety percent of Eggman's ground forces and decimating the entire Egg Fleet. This left the Eggdome as the only fully functioning building in the city. (StH: #182, #183)
Republic of Acorn Attacks
With New Megaopolis heavily damaged by Enerjak's attack, the newly reorganized Republic of Acorn decided to launch an offensive in hopes of ending the war. The Chaotix and Sonic were the first wave of this attack, battling the Dark Egg Legion as they struggled to reach the Eggdome. However, the invasion of the Suppression Squad forced the team to pull out. Later, both the Chaotix and the Freedom Fighters joined in the final push, eventually reaching the Eggdome and defeating Eggman, who was left gibbering in insanity. Snively thus assumed control of the city and responsibility for his uncle as the heroes pulled out. (StH: #189, #190, #198, #199, #200)
Takeover by the Iron Dominion
New Megaopolis was soon occupied and reinforced by soldiers from the Iron Dominion, Snively having formed an alliance with the Iron Queen during Eggman's descent into madness. The Iron King expressed no desires to remain in the city in its wrecked condition, but despite this marched forth with his troops to successfully defend it against an attack by Sonic and Monkey Khan. (StH: #194, #200, #201, #202)
For some time the ruined capital served as the dominion's base of operation, from the Eggdome they launched several campaigns against the local resistance until finally, they managed to invade New Mobotropolis en masse, abandoning the Eggdome and ruins in favor of the nanite infused city. (StH: #208)
Under Old Management
In the wake of the dominion's defeat, a frantic Snively released his uncle and returned to the ruins where they reclaimed control of both the Echidna Legion and the Eggdome. Moving his forces to the sub-levels of the bunker, Eggman kept tabs on his enemies through restored surveillance equipment while they fruitlessly searched for his whereabouts. In the following weeks, the doctor regained control over various Egg Legion-chapters, while restoring Grandmaster Lien-Da to full health and forcing Snively to declare the relationship with his former sub-boss to be over, and began to work on a new project. Death Egg Launched
The name of the city has differed over time, sometimes seen as "New Megopolis" and "New Megapolis". Since writer Ian Flynn took over, the name has consistantly been "New Megaopolis".
