Metal Sonic is a Badnik created by Dr. Eggman to do battle with Sonic the Hedgehog, having been created to match and surpass his abilities. Metal Sonic is obsessed with this goal, to the point that he briefly betrayed his creator and took on a powerful new form known as Neo Metal Sonic all for the sake of crushing his hated rival.

History[]

Early Use[]

Metal Sonic kidnaps Amy

Metal Sonic with a captive Amy Rose.

Metal was created at some point after Dr. Eggman began his campaign for world domination. The robot was first used during Eggmans plot to find the Time Stones on the Little Planet. During this time, Metal kidnapped a young Amy Rose, holding her hostage in the Stardust Speedway Zone. After traversing the miniature planet, Sonic tracked Metal down and raced the doppelganger, resulting in Metal being heavily damaged in the chase, allowing Sonic to rescue Amy. (VG: SCD)

Ancient Gear Metal Sonic

Metal Sonic empowered by an Ancient Gear

Eggman would later hatch a plan to search the Eastwatch Islands for the Ancient Gears in order to run his new super-weapon, the Mega Drive. As such, he once again relied on Metal Sonic to aid him. Sometime during the course of obtaining and then losing six of the Ancient Gears to Sonic, Tails, Amy Rose, and Knuckles, Eggman managed to install the seventh and last Ancient Gear inside of Metal Sonic, making it more powerful. After Eggman's battle with the four heroes at Eruption Ruin Zone and subsequent loss of the sixth of his found Ancient Gears, Metal Sonic made his appearance by swooping in to steal the five Ancient Gears that Tails had as well as kidnap Amy. Both Eggman and Metal Sonic then fled to Eggman's newest flying fortress. While devising a list of demands in exchange for Amy, Eggman was interrupted by Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, who had realized where Eggman and Metal Sonic could be hiding. After handing over their Ancient Gear in exchange for Amy thinking that Eggman didn't have the seventh one (since Eggman specifically asked for the "last" Ancient Gear from Sonic after stealing the five from Tails), the team realized that Metal Sonic had the last Ancient Gear inside of it. After the three defeated Metal Sonic and saved Amy, Eggman and Metal Sonic fled to Eggman's deep sea base directly under the fortress, as the airship was only for supply shipments. (SMD, SMDNL)

On another occasion, Metal Sonic was deployed again, not against Sonic but against his rival Knuckles the Echidna, the Chaotix, and their ally Mighty the Armadillo. Once again he was defeated by the heroes of Sonic's World though immediatly after his defeat Titan Metal Sonic attacked. (VG: KC)

Metal later reappeared in the White Space created by the Time Eater, where it once again challenged Sonic to race along the Stardust Speedway. As before, Metal proved no match for the hedgehog, who went on to defeat the Time Eater. (VG: SG)

Much later, Metal Sonic returned, with a completely self-upgraded AI, complete with an independent personality. The robot devised a plan to copy the lifeform data of Sonic and his friends, a task he accomplished by kidnapping his former master Eggman and using metallic copies of him to fool the heroes. During this time, he contacted Breezie the Hedgehog, building Casino Park for her as part of her new financial empire under his Eggman disguise. Breezie recognized Metal as an imposter due to his actions, as Eggman wouldn't be so generous. When Metal threatened to harm her should she warn Sonic, she brushed it off and the two apparently shared something of a relationship. Metal's plan was later discovered, but by then it was ready to use the gathered data to transform into Metal Overlord. Super Sonic, along with a super-charged Tails and Knuckles, were able to defeat the robot, returning him to his original powered down form. Metal Sonic, disguised as another Eggman robot, later ended up briefly joining Team Dark to take part in an Extreme Gear race, though his identity was eventually revealed. (StH: #270, VG: SH, SFR)

Worlds Collide[]

Tails Attacked

Metal Sonic and Bass capture Tails.

Metal Sonic was later paired with Bass, the newest assistant of Eggman's new partner, Dr. Wily, and sent to kidnap Tails. The two henchmen swiftly overwhelmed the two-tailed fox and took his unconscious body back to the Doctors. Following this, Metal Sonic went to Mega City to attack Mega Man. He struck the blue bomber from behind and then fled through a warp ring back to his world, where the real Sonic was chasing Mega Man's double, Copybot, in Green Hill Zone. Following instructions from the Doctors, the two evil doubles lured their counterparts to each other's location as part of a ploy to trick the two blue heroes into fighting each other, which was successful. His objective complete, Metal Sonic sped off to await further orders. (MM: #24, SU: #51, #53).

When the battle between Sonic and Mega Man unexpectedly moved to Mega City in Mega Man's world, Wily guessed that it was the work of Dr. Light, Mega Man's creator. Worried that Light would be a threat to their plans, the two doctors sent Metal Sonic and Bass to deal with him. The pair subsequently kidnapped Dr. Light despite interference from Proto Man, and took him back to the Wily Egg in the Skull Egg Zone. When Rouge the Bat began sabotaging the flying fortress, Metal Sonic and Bass pursued her and cornered her in one of the laboratories, and managed to capture her despite her release of the Chaos Devil. The pair then took her to be Roboticized into Rouge Woman, who joined the army of Robot Masters sent against Sonic and Mega Man's team of allies. During the battle, Eggman had Metal Sonic accompany him to Dr. Light's cell, and had Metal Sonic drag the doctor to a large hatch on the fortress. Having determined that Light was too great a threat to keep around, Eggman had Metal Sonic throw him off the ship. (STH: #248, #250, SU : #53 , MM: #25)

Metal Sonic, Bass, and Treble were then deployed to intercept Mega Man and Sonic, who had boarded the Wily Egg, and engaged the pair in battle. The villainous robots proved a formidable challenge to the heroes, and Metal Sonic proved just as dangerous an opponent to Mega Man as to Sonic. Employing several of his new weapons, Metal Sonic attempted to destroy Mega Man even after Bass was taken out of the fight, but proved no match for Sonic and Mega Man's combined power, especially with Mega Man's Roboticized Master weapons. The damaged trio eventually managed to pick themselves up, only to encounter a fleeing Knuckles, Proto Man, and Dr. Light and be caught up in the effects of the Super Genesis Wave. Due to Super Sonic's efforts, this wave's effects-as well as those of the preceding one-were undone on Sonic's World, but Eggman's interference had a dangerous impact on the world. The Hunter[]

From a readers perspective, this picks up from where the original pre-Super Genesis Wave continuity left off
Metal Sonic About to Attack Sally

Metal Sonic in pursuit of Sally.

Several days after Eggman, Orbot and Cubot ended up crash landed in the Efrikan plains after the effects of the Super Genesis wave, the trio returned to the Death Egg after a lengthy misadventure across the world, where they discovered that Sally had been aboard the Death Egg on a mission and subsequently escaped, Eggman had Metal Sonic sent after her, hoping to have her killed before Sonic could arrive to save her. Metal Sonic chased Sally to Mobotropolis, where he struck down her escape craft, but allowed her to gain help in the form of Amy Rose and Cream. Despite the girls' strength, Metal Sonic easily overpowered them and a Royal Palace Guard troupe before Sonic entered the fray. Leading Metal Sonic out of Mobotropolis by racing him while mocking how the damage made it hard for him to keep up, he proved to be nothing more than a distraction as Tails locked onto Metal Sonic with a missile and shot at him, destroying the lower half of his body. Still functioning, Metal Sonic vowed revenge and flew off. (StH: #255, #256)

After being repaired, Metal Sonic was sent to learn more about the Gaia Temples, and located a possible informant in the form of Gregorios in Apotos. Before he could question the old man, however, Metal was contacted by Eggman and ordered to proceed to Casino Park. Thanks to the Hooligans taking down the defenses, he was able to penetrate the facility with relative ease, but disrupted an attempt by Nack the Weasel to get revenge on Sonic and Knuckles. He was then thwarted by the combined efforts of Team Fighters, Knuckles, Espio, and Honey the Cat, and ordered by Eggman to withdraw. (StH: #268, #269, #270, #271)

Metal Sonic Attacks Sonic and Silver

Metal Sonic escapes Sonic and Silver.

Shortly afterward, Metal turned his its attention to the G.U.N. troops stationed within the Crystal Desert Zone; the troops having just discovered the seventh Chaos Emerald. The Knothole Freedom Fighters converged in the area just in time to be caught up in Metal's attack. Acquiring the Emerald, Metal attempted its getaway with Sonic, Tails and Bunnie giving chase, when a Genesis Portal suddenly appeared. Sonic and Metal both disappeared into the Burning Ruin Zone where Metal managed to escape. With the help of Silver the Hedgehog however, Sonic caught up with his robo-doppleganger and after a battle with the hedgehogs, Metal lost the emerald to Sonic and was sent hurtling through another Genesis Portal into the Distant Abyss Zone. (StH: #272, SU: #75)

In an erased timeline, following another alliance with Wily, Eggman volunteered to call Metal Sonic and have him retrieve the last Chaos Emerald so that it could be used to stop Sigma. Metal arrived just in time to save the skeleton crew of the Sky Patrol from Sigma, and then took part in the final assault on the monstrous villain. These events were later erased by the actions of Xander Payne, thus returning Metal Sonic to his extradimensional exile. (StH: #275; MM: #51, #52; SB: #10)

Under the Naugus Twins' Control[]

Eggman returns with Metal Sonic

Dr. Eggman returns from the Distant Abyss Zone wth Metal Sonic.

Eggman himself soon rushed into the Distance Abyss Zone to rescue Metal Sonic after Orbot informed him of Metal Sonic's current location, only to be greeted by a giant monster. Eggman used the Big Arms to fight the monster but was still losing. Only on 1% power, Metal used the power he had left to save his master only to deactivate moments later. Eggman grabbed Metal and rushed back into the Genesis Portal and told Orbot and Cubot to take metal to a charging station. Sometime later he and Eggman went to investigate the recently conquered Eggmanland. He helped Eggman get back into his network until they were ambushed by the Witchcarters. Metal attacks only to be easily knocked down by Bearenger the Grizzly. He continued to fight and protect Eggman until he attempted to attack Naugus, only to get crystallized by Wendy. Bearenger desired to finish off Metal Sonic but was stopped by Wendy's brother Walter, who had other plans for the crystallized robot. (StH: #276, SU: #83)

CrystalSonic

Crystal Sonic attacks Dr. Eggman.

After Eggman and his assembled Egg Bosses sabotage Eggmanland's defences in order to reclaim the facility, Wendy sent the crystallized Metal Sonic, which she dubs "Crystal Sonic", to attack them. However, Eggman revealed his trump card- his Hard-Light Armor, which he used to free Metal Sonic from the twins' clutches. (SU: #85, #86)

Panic In The Sky[]

Metal was soon summoned by Doctor Eggman to aid the Hooligans in stealing the Chaos Emeralds and Gaia Keys within Castle Acorn. During the raid, Metal fought Gemerl while the Hooligans entered the castle. After the Hooligans received the case containing the Chaos Emeralds and Gaia Keys, Metal left Gemerl to the Hooligans and Witchcarters while he delivered the goods to Eggman. (StH: #283, #284)

Appearance[]

Metal Sonic was created in the image of Sonic the Hedgehog, and is thus mostly built of blue metal. He has a yellow circular depression in his chest with a black center, mirroring the peach-colored fur on Sonic's chest. His head has metal fins resembling Sonic's quills, and a pair of triangular "ears." Metal Sonic has a muzzle, shoulder plates, and upper arms, legs, and fingers made out of silvery metal. His palms are black, while the backs of his hands are square yellow plates. His forearms and lower legs are blue metal like his head and torso, and he has red feet with white stripes designed to resemble Sonic's shoes. He has optic sensors with black sclera and red irises.

As Neo Metal Sonic, Metal Sonic developed larger fins with white streaks running up them, with one running down between his eyes and onto his forehead. His shoulder armor became black, and he developed a black band around his waist decorated with silver spikes. This band also produced a black cape that fell around Metal Sonic's legs. He also grew taller, with many of his features becoming more angular. He could also transform to take on the exact appearance of Dr. Eggman.

Personality[]

Metal Sonic's single desire is to surpass and defeat Sonic the Hedgehog, and at one point went to incredible lengths to destroy its "loathsome copy" by betraying Eggman and transforming into the monstrous Metal Overlord. After its betrayal, it appears that Eggman placed some form of safeguard on it to ensure that Metal Sonic remains obedient to him. Despite this safeguard, Metal Sonic still retains its single minded desire to surpass Sonic.

Abilities[]

Black Shield

The Black Shield.

Burst Shield

The Burst Shield.

Having been created to destroy Sonic, Metal Sonic is possessed of incredible speed and strength, as well as flight capability. He is also capable of manifesting energy in the form of his defensive Black Shield or offensive Burst Shield. Metal Sonic has also demonstrated the ability to exceed his original design and take on incredible powers, such as when he became a more powerful version of himself called Neo Metal Sonic. In this form he could morph his form into silvery metal and take on the appearance of others, most notably Dr. Eggman, and later transformed into Metal Overlord.

Background Information[]

  • As SEGA's mandate claims that there should only be one Metal Sonic in the new universe, it is possible that now all previous versions of Metal Sonic ever built have been merged into a single continuously rebuilt entity. However, Captain Metal (a previous Metal Sonic model) still continues to exist with his nature as a Metal Sonic now only being hinted upon, indicating that previous separate models may still exist or have existed in some form.
  • In the video games Metal Sonic has little to no speaking role and the only games that give him speech are in Sonic Heroes and Sonic Generations, Sonic Heroes being the only one where he is actually given a voice.

Off Panel[]

Despite being a serious and even scary character, Metal Sonic has appeared in several of the Off Panel humor strips for Archie Sonic the Hedgehog. These included StH #248's strip, in which an attempt to replace his torso engine with a Mega Buster backfired-quite literally. He appeared in SU #54's Off Panel forming a band with Bass, a nod to an abandoned idea for them to fuse together for the battle with Mega Man and Sonic.

Metal Sonic was also featured in StH #271's Off Panel, where he was asked why Rocket Metal Sonic from Sonic the Fighters hadn't appeared, to which he responded with a flashback indicating that the enlarged head of that form would have made it impossible for him to move.
