Angel Island (originally/also known as the Floating Island) was a large landmass spanning several biomes which floated above the surface of planet Mobius. Originally a part of the continent of Downunda, the Echidnas living in the city of Echidnaopolis used the powers of 12 Chaos Emeralds to lift their city off the surface, avoiding destruction from a comet. Since then, Angel Island has been the home of many different species, the two largest being the Echidnas and the Dingoes.

After the Dr. Eggman-backed Dingo regime's mass genocide led by General Kage von Stryker, the island's Echidna population was left in shambles. Enerjak would later relocate the surviving echidnas to Albion while the Dingoes were disarmed and exiled to Sandopolis Zone.

As of year 3237 it was largely uninhabited except for the Dingoes, agents of the Knothole Freedom Fighters, Chaotix and the island's last Guardian; Knuckles the Echidna.

History[]

Ascension[]

EchidnaopolisAscending

Echidnaopolis flying into the air.

Hundreds of years ago a group of Echidnas known as the Knuckles Clan, having set out from their homeland of Albion, eventually settled in a region of Downunda and built the city of Echidnaopolis. (KtE: #12)

The technologically advanced city thrived on the mainland until roughly 600 years ago when the scientists Jordann and Kayla-La discovered the White Comet and its collision course with the city. Desperate to save their home, Kayla-La developed and proposed a plan to physically move the city out of harm's way using the power of Chaos Emeralds. The echidnas excavated twelve of the rare and powerful gems and placed them in the Chaos Chamber to harness their energy. To catalyce the effect the Fire Ants dug under the foundation of the city, separating it from the planet's surface, thus propelling the city into the sky and creating the Floating Island. A large crater marked its former place in Downunda. (StH: #34, #82, KtE: #10)

Dimitri and Edmund's Plan[]

Four generations later, the great-great grandsons of Jordann and Kayla-La, Edmund and Dimitri, sought to return the city to its original site in Downunda. While the energy of the Chaos Emeralds were not completely understood, Edmund and Dimitri theorized that, should the energy be gradually drained, the decent of the island could be controlled and thus allowing it to safely return to the surface. The brothers developed the Chaos Syphon, a device that would implent their theoretical ideas by draining chaos energy, and proposed their plan to a gathered council. However, due to the current High Councilor's personal political goals, as well as resentment, or even jealousy, from the Theocracy towards the Technocracy for having saved Echidnaopolis in the past, the plan was rejected, officially on the grounds of being too dangerous. (StH: #35, KtE: #1, #23, #24)

Dimitri would, nevertheless, ignore this rejection and proceeded with his plan. However, when using the Chaos Syphon he absorbed the energy himself and was transformed into Enerjak. Corrupted by his newfound power Dimitri sought to take over the world but was stopped by the Fire Ants who buried him alive in his citadel.

Conflict and Desolation[]

After Dimitri's presumed death and the High Council's decision to ban excessive technology, an opposition loyal to Dimitri and technology arose and formed the Dark Legion. The legion initiated a civil war with the Echidnas still loyal to the High Council which ravaged the island and resulted in the death of Edmund. As a reaction to this Edmund's son, Steppenwolf, with help from the Fire Ants would establish the guardianship with Steppenwolf becoming the first Guardian of the island. The Legion was transported to the Twilight Zone by Guardian Steppenwolf ending the civil war. Throughout the island's history, the Dark Legion occasionally managed to break through the dimensional barriers attempting to retake Echidnaopolis, though each time they were repelled by the current Guardian. (KtE: #16, #17, #18, #25)

During the guardianship of Moonwatcher, the Dark Legion managed to break out of the Twilight Cage and invade the island to try to reclaim it. However the invasion was thwarter by the guardian, sending the legion back to the Twilight Zone. (KtE#18CSE)

Angel Island's two primary species were the Dingoes and the Echidnas. The Dingoes, an aggressive militant race, often attempted to wipe out their echidna counterparts. After stealing a cache of nuclear weapons, the Dingoes launched a nuclear strike on Echidnaopolis. The city was saved by an energy dome erected by the current Guardian of the time, Hawking; however, the fallout from the blasts quickly spread across the island making it uninhabitable. To counter this both Echidnaopolis and the Dingo cities, as well as other civilizations on the island, were transported to their own zones where they were protected from the harmful radiation until Hawking and several future Guardians could restore the island to back to healthy conditions. (KtE: #5)

During the leadership of Luger, the legion managed to instate two invasions against the island. However both were without success as the first one was stopped by guardian Thunderhawk, and the second was recalled by the grandmaster due to his wife's decaying health. (SSS#11CSE)

Knuckles as Guardian[]

In the year 3230 Knuckles the Echidna became the acting guardian of the Floating Island at the age of 10. During Knuckle's early life the island was visited by several visitors beginning with Maximillian Acorn and his daughter Sally Acorn whom visited the island when Locke was still acting guardian of the island. (SSS: #9)

After a long time of peace the island was visited by Dr. Ivo Robotnik, Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles "Tails" Prower. The former tricked the guardian into that Sonic and Tails were out to steal the Chaos Emeralds responsible for keeping the island afloat. In reality Robotnik stole the emerald while Knuckles learnt his mistake and together with Sonic and Tails retrieved the emerald. Sonic and the Freedom Fighters would visit the Island several times often, with the aid of Knuckles, dealing with Robotnik's schemes. (StH: #13)

As Knuckles learned more about the island he come in contact with a mysterious entity known as Archimedes who had been kidnapping the Chaotix. Archimedes turned out to be a Fire Ant who would later serve as a mentor to Knuckles. The discovery of Archimedes' identity occurred simultaneously as Dimitri, as Enerjak, made his return to the island. He was stopped by the collected effort of the guardian and his Fire Ant friend. (StH: #35, #36STT, KCX, , KMS: #1, #2, #3)

The last and final escape of the Dark Legion from the Twilight Cage occurred just prior to the return of Echidnaopolis. The current grandmaster of the Dark Legion, Kragok, initiated an invasion of the island but met resistance from Knuckles the Echidna and the Chaotix. With the intervention of the Brotherhood of Guardians the Dark Legion base of operation was destroyed and the Legion fled to the Sandopolis Desert. However the invasion was not a complete waste as the Dark Legion would stay on the island until their remaining troops were banished by Knuckles as Enerjak. (KtE: #1, KtE: #2, KtE: #3)

Echidnaopolis Return[]

During Knuckle's time as guardian Echidnaopolis returned to the Prime Zone. This occurred when the dimensional barriers were weakened by Dr. Ivo Robotnik's firing of the Ultimate Annihilator. However, the Dingoes were also returned to the Prime Zone and as the two species were returned at the same time a small conflict ravaged the island. The conflict was, however, cut short as the Dingoes were forced into a truce when their city was destroyed. This marked the beginning of a period were the Dingoes and Echidnas would live alongside in Echidnapolis. The Dingoes were not contented by this situation as they were relocated to the Echidnaopolis slums, as a response to this several riots broke out. (, StH: #50, KtE: #4, KtE: #5, KtE: #6, SSSM: #2)

During this time Renfield T. Rodent reopened his amusement park, Happyland. Although, the amusement park was just a façade for selling a highly addictive sauce spiced with Lemon Sundrop Dandelion, a potentially lethal drug. The plot was eventually discovered, and put to a stop, by the Chaotix and Constable Remington. (KtE: #13, #14)

The island was later visited by Geoffrey St. John and his Royal Secret Service who was on a mission, given by King Acorn, to find out the fate of the king's wife, Alicia Acorn, and child, Elias Acorn. During this mission the island was ravaged by heavy blizzards as a result of the Day of Fury and the commander had difficulties navigating the island. The secret service ultimately came into contact with both Elias Acorn and the Brotherhood who handed over the stasis bound Alicia Acorn. (KtE: #19, KtE: #20, KtE: #21)

A major change in the island's demographics and political map occurred when the Dark Legion fired the Quantum Beam wave, from their Battle Cruiser, at the island. This transported everyone on the island but the Legion to another zone and destroyed an uninhabited part of the Sandopolis Desert. The legion would eventually fire the beam once more, thus returning the echidnas to Echidnaopolis, when Knuckles agreed to cooperate with them, this was, however, stopped by Guardian Tobor. Therefore, Chaos Knuckles had to undo the effect of the Quantum Beam himself. At this time the island was also visited by a time traveler. (StH: #100, #101, #107, SSS: #14)

Dingo Takeover[]

Eggisland

Eggman takes over Angel Island

Almost two years after the Echidnas and Dingoes had been returned to Angel Island from their Pocket Zones, the dissatisfied Dingoes under the new leadership of Kage Von Stryker turned to Dr. Eggman for support. In exchange for becoming Eggman's enforcers and servants to the Eggman Empire, the Dingoes received technology, supplies and assistance from the Eggman Empire to enslave the Echidna population and completely take over the island. With Sonic the Hedgehog believed dead and far off in space, and Knuckles the Echidna on the surface of Mobius, the overwhelming Dingo forces successfully took control of Angel Island. (StH: #125, #136, #138, #139)

Because of the Island being occupied by the Eggman Empire and the Dingoes, various Echidna Prison Camps where constructed to enslave the echidna population. A large amount of the population of the now destroyed Echidnaopolis ended up in these camps, including former Constable Remington. As a result of this, the Dark Legion, together with former leader of the Dingoes Helmuth von Stryker and the Fire Ant Council formed the Angel Island Resistance against Eggman. The resistance operated from Hidden Palace where many echidna refugees lived in tents. (StH#138, #139, #181)

During this time, because of the inhumane living conditions for them, a large proportion of the echidna population became more religious and many started to believe in the Prophecy of the Ancient Walkers which stated that an Avatar would return during times of peril to save the echidnas. (StH#139)

During Knuckles return to the island, the resistance, together with the Chaotix and Sonic the Hedgehog struck a blow to the Dingo regime, liberating a prison camp, releasing Locke from his hostage situation and destroyed much of Dingo infrastructure. This enabled the echidna population to rebuilt the city of Echidnaopolis briefly with Locke overseeing constructions, but the Dingo Army had only lost a small portion of their army and where still a threat to the Echidnas. (StH: #141#150)

The situation worsened when the Dark Legion flung into a civil war between the Flame legion led by Lien-Da and the Frost legion led by Remington. This resulted in a loss of defense for the newly built city which became vulnerable for Dingo attacks. (StH: #165)

With the Dark Legion civil war, the Brotherhood gone and Knuckles still being an errand boy for the Kingdom of Acorn the population was ill equipped to defend themselves, resulting in the Dingoes destroying the city once more. After this the remaining few echidnas relocated to a village they named Echidnaopolis after the fallen city located on mushroom hill. (StH: #165)

With the Dingo army on the rise and the legion in a civil war that reduced their power, the echidnas in Echidnaopolis where only protected by Guardian Locke. Locke left this job after a short period of time to search for his forefathers, he therefore trusted the protection of the last few echidnas to Doctor Finitevus and the Destructix. During this time, the master emerald where intensively studied by Finitevus for his plan to bring back the entity known as Enerjak. (StH: #171)

Enerjak's Cleansing[]

After nearly two years of Dingo oppression, their regime and Dr. Eggman's hold on Angel Island would come to an abrupt end. Knuckles, under the influence of Dr. Finitevus, became the Chaos demigod Enerjak and used his near-omnipotent powers to rid the Dingoes of their technology and banish them to the desert of Sandopolis Zone. The Echidnas who were still alive were then transported to the ruins of Albion where they would be hidden and safe from future harm. When Sonic and Enerjak fought, Shrine Isle was created. A bridge was later added to it. (StH: #181, #184, #186)

Chained[]

Dr. Finitevus eventually came into contact with the Dark Egg Legion in Downunda and made an alliance with them by handing over his Warp Ring technology, allowing them to anchor Angel Island to Downunda and be under the Eggman Empire's control. In return, Finitevus would be allowed back on to the island at any time to study the Master Emerald. His plans were thwarted, however, by the combined efforts of the Chaotix and Downunda Freedom Fighters. (SU: #8, #11, #12)

Future[]

By 3437 P.X.E., Angel Island had fallen to the ocean and become known as Onyx Island.

Political Factions[]

Echidnaopolis (formerly)[]

The city-state of Echidnaopolis had its total territorial claim located on the island. After the Eggman Empire-backed Dingo takeover the faction was diminished to a small village, with its inhabitants eventually relocated to Albion ending the over 600 years Echidna dominance over the island.

Prior to its destruction Echidnaopolis was the most powerful political faction on the island. The city state was present during all of the island's history aside from a brief relocation to a pocket zone.

The Dingo Regime[]

Just like Echdinaopolis, the Dingo Regime was solely an Angel Island fraction. The regime was the second most powerful fraction on the island, behind Echidnaopolis, which it built on its military strength and stolen Echidna technology. At its peak the Dingo Regime had enslaved the island's Echidna population and controlled most of the island but was soon banished, by Enerjak, to the Sandopolis Desert where the faction currently operates a base.

Eggman Empire (formerly)[]

The Eggman Empire had a brief presence on the island in the form of the Dingo Regime which was a puppet-state for the Empire. The faction's presence on the island was abruptly halted by the banishment of the Dingoes.

The Dark Legion (formerly)[]

The Dark Legion invaded Angel Island several times but only gained solid ground on their last attempt. The legion caused several conflicts on the island both with Echidnaopolis and the Dingo Regime. The faction was removed alongside other Echidnas from the island by Enerjak.

The Fire Ants (formerly)[]

The Fire Ants was a Monarchic people populating the Lava Reef Zone. Governed by the Fire Ant Queen the Fire Ants often aided the Echidnas, thus being prominent in the island's history. However, the Fire Ants territorial claim seemed to be limited compared to the Echidnas and Dingoes, never being a great power of the island. The Fire Ants were scattered and their kingdom destroyed by the Dingo takeover of the island.

Rainbow Valley Chameleons (formerly)[]

A colony of chameleons lived in the Rainbow Valley mostly isolated from the rest of the island. In this colony lived the chameleon tasked to survey the guardian. The colony was robotiziced in the second Robotnik war. it is unclear what became of them.

Geography[]

Landscape[]

The island hosted a very diverse set of biomes ranging from cold mountains such as Ice Cap Zone to hot deserts such as Sandopolis Zone. A majority of the island was covered by the Sandopolis desert and the Dragon Spine Mountains, the rest mostly compromised by tropical forest-like vegetation, e.g. Mushroom Hill Zone, Rainbow Valley etc.. The island seems to be volcanic active as proven by the existence of the Lava Reef Zone.

Flowing in a ring around the island was the Eternal River which probably originated in the Dragon Spine Mountains, Echidnaopolis was located on the banks of the river. Furthermore, several rivers flowed of the edge of the island creating waterfalls plummeting onto the planet's surface. The largest lake on the island was Lake Nessie, however, not much is known about the lake.

The island had a rich flora and fauna compromising mostly of real-life Australian animals such as; wild dingoes, cockatoos, etc. In the Mushroom Hill Zone over-sized mushrooms grew, an example of said flora.

Background Information[]

  • Angel Island first appeared in the video game Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
  • Strawberry Fields was likely named in reference to the song "Strawberry Fields Forever" by The Beatles.
  • It is unclear how the height of the island's orbit does not lower the temperature on the island.
    • A possible explanation is the fact that Angel Island seems to be geologically active, supported by the existence of the Lava Reef Zone, this may rise the temperature of the island.
    • Another explanation may be that some of the energy emitted by the Master Emerald is converted into heat energy, heating up the island.
  • It is also unclear how the island's orbit time affects the time of the sunrise on the island.
  • The Island's surface area is 57.75 square metrons, it circles the entirety of Mobius in 3.2 datrons, it floats 6.83 metrons above Mobius's surface, and its lowest point is located 2.43 metrons beneath the surface.(#101)
