The Chaos Syphon was a device created by the Echidna brothers Edmund and Dimitri hundreds of years before the birth of Knuckles the Echidna. As its name indicates, it has the power to drain Chaos energy from a target, but has often had the effect of transferring that energy to its operator.
The Chaos Syphon was originally going to be used to gradually drain the powers of the Chaos Emeralds in order to gently return Angel Island to its place on the surface of Mobius. However, the scientist brothers' plan was denied by the High Councilor at the time, Menthor, which caused Dimitri to storm off furiously. Unwilling to accept the High Council's decision, Dimitri decided to use the Chaos Syphon anyways. When it was activated, the Chaos Syphon not only drained the powers from all but one of the Chaos Emeralds, but sent them into Dimitri, turning him into the Chaos demigod Enerjak. Recovered by the Ancient Walkers, the Chaos Syphon was provided to Turbo Tails during his battle with Master Mogul. He attempted to use it to drain Mogul of his powers, and his near success drove Mogul to pursue Angel Island's remaining Emeralds. The resulting battle led to the creation of the Master Emerald. When Knuckles evolved into the omnipotent being known as Chaos Knuckles, who was essentially a living Chaos Emerald, the High Council of Albion voted to drain Knuckles of his new powers to prevent him from becoming as large a threat as his distant uncle Dimitri was as Enerjak. The Albion scientist Doctor Finitevus created the Chaos Siphon Suit, which essentially operated the same way as the Chaos Syphon, in order to drain the powers from Knuckles. The process failed, corrupting Finitevus' mind and turning him into an albino Echidna with strong Chaos powers. (StH: #94, #182)
Weeks after the Chaos Syphon's use, Mammoth Mogul created a new Chaos Syphon based off Dimitri and Edmund's original design, though this new device was the size of an entire room. Mogul used the dying Dimitri as bait to draw in Chaos Knuckles in order to steal his immeasurable power. Knuckles managed to use his powers to save Dimitri's life at the cost of his own, but Mogul used the opportunity to drain the powers from Chaos Knuckles during the Guardian's final act. The Brotherhood of Guardians later used the technology in crafting their Anti-Enerjak Weapon, a precaution against the Chaos demigod's return.(StH: #117, #118, #182, #183, CSE)
