Bass is a robot created by Dr. Wily in the year 20XX in an alternate reality. He was created to match Mega Man in every way, and has been the latter's fiercest rival since his creation. Bass has not technically been created yet in Mega Man's current timeline, but he was brought into being after Dr. Wily and his new partner Doctor Eggman unleashed the Genesis Wave on both of their worlds, the effects of which fused the past and future of Wily's world.

History[]

The Wily Egg Enforcer[]

Tails Attacked

Bass and Metal Sonic capture Tails.

Bass came into existence after the second Genesis Wave, a phenomenon engineered by Dr. Eggman and Dr. Wily, reset his world. In the altered timeline created by the event, he had already been created by Wily, and was known by Mega Man to have rebelled in response to some of Dr. Wily's orders previously. After the Wave had passed, he was sent by Wily and Eggman to Sonic's World with Metal Sonic to kidnap Tails, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, and Shadow the Hedgehog. The four were subsequently transformed into the Roboticized Masters, who were more easily able to pass between the worlds than Bass and Metal Sonic. Apparently taking a liking to his partnership with Metal Sonic, he volunteered them for a mission to capture Dr. Light and put an end to his interference in the doctors' plans. Traveling to Light Labs, the pair succeeded in capturing Dr. Light despite the presence of Proto Man, and escaped with him through a Warp Ring to the Skull Egg Zone. (StH: #248, MM: #24, #25)

Returning to the Wily Egg, the two robots next saw action as they set out to capture Rouge the Bat, who had infiltrated and sabotaged the flying fortress. The pair managed to corner her in a laboratory, only for her to release the Chaos Devil, which Bass began to attack after it grabbed Rouge and Metal Sonic. Eggman and Wily arrived and ordered him to stand down, and had the Devil release Metal Sonic and Rouge, the latter of whom was then taken prisoner. When Metal Sonic was ordered to take her away for Roboticization, Bass claimed superiority to the Roboticized Masters and was commanded to accompany his partner to the Roboticizer. From the bridge of the Wily Egg, Bass observed the subsequent battle between Mega Man and Sonic the Hedgehog's team of allies and the doctors' army of time-cloned Robot Masters, though he became annoyed with Orbot and Cubot as they attempted to handle his pet robot wolf Treble. When the two doctors began fighting over Eggman's attempt on Dr. Light's life, Bass interrupted their argument to inform them that Mega Man, Sonic, Tails, and Rush had penetrated the Wily Egg. As a result, he and Metal Sonic, now joined by Treble, were sent to meet the heroes, and confronted Mega Man and Sonic after Rush and a wounded Tails left the flying fortress. (SU: #53, StH: #250, MM: #27)

Taking on their respective rivals, Bass and Metal Sonic once again proved to be a formidable combination. Bass attacked from a distance, though he wanted Mega Man to face him, and had Treble close in to attack directly. When this resulted in Treble being hit, Bass charged Mega Man in rage, and blasted Sonic off his feet. In an effort to confuse their enemies, the heroes switched opponents, but Bass' shots and Treble's attacks proved too much for Sonic, whom Bass sent flying with a devastating kick. He continued to blast at Sonic, until the heroes decided upon a new strategy: double-teaming him. Sonic came at him again, serving as a distraction that allowed Mega Man to employ the Chaos Cannon weapon he had acquired from Shadow Man, freezing Bass and allowing Sonic to strike him. Bass attempted to hit Sonic again, but was then struck by Silver Man's Psycho Burst followed by Sonic's Spin-Dash. Vector Man's Acoustic Blaster, a kick from Sonic, and a final blow from Rose Woman's Piko Hammer soon took Bass out of the fight. He tried to refute Mega Man's claims that he was unable even to fuse with a limping Treble to continue fighting, but struggled even to speak. Following the heroes' capture, the battle-damaged trio struggled to get back on their feet, Bass cursing the doctors' plans and blaming them for his defeat. He had little time to gripe, however, as the Super Genesis Wave washed over the Skull Egg Zone, Mobius, and Earth, rewriting all reality in its path. Super Mega Man later reversed its effects, returning Bass and Treble to their proper place in reality. (SU: #54, StH: #251)

Personality[]

Bass has shown a capacity for cruelty and a love of causing others harm.  He is obsessed with defeating Mega Man by any means necessary and proving himself as the most powerful robot in the world. This has, at times, caused him to rebel against Wily's authority, but seems content to do his bidding so long as he finds it entertaining.  Bass is shown to have a very short temper and is easily annoyed or angered, especially when facing someone with an ego to match his own (namely Sonic).  Despite this, he cares deeply for his dog Treble, and even stopped during a fight with Mega Man to make sure he wasn't hurt, becoming enraged when Mega Man attacked Treble in the first place.  Although he is quick to announce his superiority over other robots, he is not above working with others, shown by his constant companionship with Treble, as well as his partnership with Metal Sonic, which Bass seemed to enjoy.

Abilities[]

Bass possesses a number of abilities similar to Mega Man's, including strength that enabled him to easily subdue Tails.  He is also capable of firing energy bullets in rapid succession, fast enough for even Sonic to have a hard time dodging them. He has great strength and impressive physical speed and reflexes as well, demonstrated by his ability to land a kick on Sonic that sent the Hedgehog flying, as well as being able to deflect a Spin Dash with one hand. According to Mega Man, he also has the ability to fuse with Treble for more power, though this form is apparently impossible to take while damaged and Bass never employed it in his battles with the heroes.

Appearance[]

Bass is a humanoid robot roughly the size of Mega Man with black, yellow, and white armor. He wears a large helmet with two yellow fins sticking out from the sides, and his exposed face is marked with purple stripes on the sides of his red eyes. A four-pointed star decorates his forehead, while a blue triangle is present on his chest. He has white hands and black gauntlets lined with yellow which-like Mega Man and Proto Man-he can convert into a buster weapon.

Background Information[]

  • In keeping with the Mega Man series' use of music themed names, Bass' name is derived from the musical term, meaning his name is actually pronounced Base.
    • In Japanese media, he is instead known as Forte, also a musical term. Despite the name change in English media, one can still make out the letter "F" on his chest plate.
  • Bass was alluded to at the end of the first story of Sonic Universe #50, when Dr. Eggman said that Metal Sonic's partner would be a base villain like him. This is actually somewhat of a canon contradiction, as Bass would not come into existence until after the Genesis Wave was fired.
  • Although Bass is considered by some to be the Mega Man universe's parallel to Shadow the Hedgehog, the two had no interaction whatsoever throughout the entire crossover.
  • Despite not appearing in a single Sonic the Hedgehog issue, he does appear on the variant cover to Sonic #248.

Off Panel[]

Bass appeared in several of the Short Circuits/Off Panel humor strips for the crossover-though never in an issue of Sonic the Hedgehog- namely:

  • The Off Panel for SU #51, in which Wily applied data taken on Sonic to Bass' design, causing Bass to possess Sonic-like features.
  • The Short Circuits for MM #26, which features him and E-123 Omega as "Destruction Buddies 4 Life."
  • The Off Panel for SU #54, where he teams up with Metal Sonic to form the rock band "Metal and Bass."
