Archie Sonic the Hedgehog Issue 98 was the ninety-eighth issue of the main Sonic the Hedgehog comic series.

Summary[]

Story One[]

"Sonic Adventure 2"

Three months ago, Sonic and his friends defeated Silver Sonic II and reprogrammed it to chase Dr. Eggman out of Station Square. The robotic guardian chased him all the way to Prison Island, where the doctor fell into a deep crevasse, supposedly to his death. Eggman found himself in an abandoned, high tech jail cell that had previously held his grandfather. Inside, he found the professor's secret journal, revealing to him a secret weapon.

One week ago, Shadow the Hedgehog steals a Chaos Emerald from a Station Square bank. Silver Sonic II tries to stop him, but is easily destroyed. Detective J.J. Moto is given the case, and delivers the bank's security footage to the President. The President mistakes Shadow for Sonic the Hedgehog, and hires Rouge the Bat to recover the Chaos Emerald.

24 hours ago, a team of G.U.N. operatives, the Paladin Team Sigma-Alpha 2, headed by Hugo Brass leaves Station Square to capture Sonic the Hedgehog. In the present, the team surrounds Sonic but is easily outmatched by the supersonic hedgehog. While Sonic brags about his skills, they manage to capture him with an electric net. As Sonic is loaded on to a helicopter, he spots a loose screw. When the chopper approaches Station Square, Sonic takes out most of the crew and busts out mid-flight. Using a piece of the helicopter as a board, he slides into the city and escapes briefly only to find himself being chased by a massive G.U.N. truck.

Story Two[]

"As the Shadow Awakes!"

Five decades ago, aboard the Space Colony ARK, Dr. Gerald Robotnik is trying to unlock the secrets of immortality. He talks half to himself, half to a creature in a tube about his life's work and how he hopes to cure his granddaughter, Maria Robotnik, of her crippling disease. The creature in the tube begins to move, shocking Gerald. A sudden power surge frightens Maria, who calls for her grandfather. She tells him that a space shuttle from Station Square is coming towards them, and Gerald orders Maria to come to him. The shuttle docks and the military agents board, attempting to retrieve "Project: Shadow". Gerald tries to stall the men while Maria and Shadow head for an escape pod. Shadow gets in, but Maria is shot in the back by their pursuers and slain.

Gerald is taken to his cell on Prison Island and forced to make another creature like Shadow. The original Shadow's pod washes ashore, but is empty. Angry at his granddaughter's death, Gerald plots his revenge. Gerald builds a laser cannon in the ARK strong enough to destroy planets, and remembers that Shadow has a piece of his DNA in him that ensures that, should he die, Shadow will take his revenge. He also makes a chip detailing his plans and hides it in the lab. Worried Gerald might pulling the wool over their eyes, the Station Square military pulls the plug on "Project: Shadow" and has Gerald executed. They never found Gerald's secret chip.

Key Events[]

Background Information[]

  • This issue features a partial comic tie-in to the videogame Sonic Adventure 2. The rest

of the game would be adapted into the comics in Sonic Universe #2, almost eight years later.
  • This the first full story pencilled by Patrick "Spaz" Spaziante since Sonic the Hedgehog #39.

Errors[]

  • Sonic is wearing his standard sneakers, while he wears a pair of SOAP shoes in the Sonic Adventure 2 video game. This is most likely because an early demo version of the game, which was likely used as reference for this issue, featured Sonic in his standard footware.
  • Maria's hair was mistakenly colored brown in this issue.
