Archie Sonic the Hedgehog Issue 83 was the eighty-third issue of the main Sonic the Hedgehog comic series.

Summary[]

Story One[]

"Menace to Society"

Knuckles the Echidna lands in the Mystic Ruins and finds Dr. Eggman lying unconscious nearby. He wonders if he should finish Eggman off while Chaos sneaks up behind him. Meanwhile, in the Station Square Hotel, Sonic tells the Freedom Fighters that Chaos has been defeated and apologizes to Tails for losing the Tornado in the process. Nate Morgan informs Sonic that the Tornado was equipped with a tracer and hands him a device that can locate the bi-plane. Sonic and Tails head out to find their plane.

The duo make their way to the Mystic Ruins, where they find Knuckles knocked unconscious and Eggman flying away in his Egg Mobile. Knuckles stops them from chasing after Eggman, explaining that Chaos attacked him and that Tails' plane is somehow connected to the monster's return. The group heads deep into the Mysterious Cat Country, where they find Big and Froggy next to the crashed Tornado. Suddenly, whirlwind of water appears and steals the Super Emerald from the plane's wreckage. Sonic realizes that the strange storm, which was actually Chaos, is heading for Station Square.

Mayor Bullyani gives the Freedom Fighters a tour of the city's power plant. He explains that Station Square's artificial environment is maintained by six Super Emeralds held in a convenient display case. Suddenly, a torrent of water bursts from the ceiling and envelops the emeralds, causing them to disappear. The city is suddenly flooded by a massive influx of water as Chaos transforms into Perfect Chaos. The Freedom Fighters try to alleviate the crisis, rescuing citizens from the flooded streets and buildings.

Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, Big and Froggy arrive in the city just as Dr. Eggman appears in his new Eggship Destroyer. Perfect Chaos turns its attention to the battleship and destroys it in a single blast, sending Eggman plummeting into the city below. Sonic celebrates, but Knuckles reminds him that they still have to defeat Chaos. Just then, a mysterious light appears before Sonic.

After quickly showing Sonic that Chaos was a peaceful creature until Echidnas invaded its home, the light reveals itself to be Tikal. She pleads for the heroes to stop Chaos without destroying him and explains that he is still connected to the city's power systems. Tikal proposes sealing Chaos in the Master Emerald, but Sonic argues that sealing him won't help and they need to quell his fury. Tikal magically steals the seven Super Emeralds out of Chaos and throws them to Sonic, who transforms into Super Sonic. Both super powered beings trade blows, but Sonic realizes that their battle is only making Chaos angrier than ever.

Bonus Features[]

Pinup Pages/Activity Pages[]

Off Panel

Sonic calls the editor, alarmed to learn that he's moved to San Francisco, California. The editor explains that he's working for SEGA directly now, but will still be editing the comic. Sonic runs across the country to his office, asking the editor how late he can stay at Fisherman's Wharf. The editor yells at Sonic to get out of his chair while his co-workers at SEGA listen from another room, amused by how weird he is. Written by Michael Gallagher, Pencils by Dave Manak, Inks by Jim Amash.

Quotes[]

  • Tikal: "He must be sealed in the Master Emerald!"
  • Sonic: "How will that help? It won't change how he feels inside, will it? His heart will still remain in turmoil and his anger just won't vanish! He'll just be trapped forever!"

  • Tikal: "Chaos only used the negative power of the emeralds. Sonic, you should be able to harness their real power! Negative forces aren't the only way to empower the emeralds! Our positive feelings toward each other can make them work. Our hearts together form an awesome power."

Key Events[]

  • Chaos absorbs enough emeralds to transform into his ultimate form, Perfect Chaos.
  • With the help of Tikal, Sonic transforms into Super Sonic to battle Chaos.

Background Information[]

  • This issue's cover is the first half of a two part image.
  • Perfect Chaos serves as the final boss in the Sonic Adventure video game.

Cameos & References[]

  • Perfect Chaos' first appearance is based on the CGI movie played both in the opening cinematic and before the final boss fight in Sonic Adventure.
  • Between Tikal's appearance and Sonic's transformation into Super Sonic, many lines are taken directly from the end of Sonic Adventure. In this issue, they're attributed exclusively to Sonic and Tikal instead of several characters as in the video game.

Errors[]

  • Tikal is spelled Tical in this issue.
  • When Tikal appears to the cast during Perfect Chaos' rampage, she declares Chaos "Must be sealed in the Master Emerald now". This line, taken word for word from her appearance in Sonic Adventure, conflicts with Archie's attempts to mesh the existing Archie storyline with the new setting introduced by Sega in Sonic Adventure, where Chaos and Tikal were never sealed in the Master Emerald (which at that point in time had been shattered by Eggman in an attempt to feed Chaos) as they had been in the game, but the Black Emerald instead.

Reprint History[]

This issue's story has been reprinted in the following places:

Continuity[]

  • "Menace to Society" picks up from where "Sonic Adventure" (SSS#13) left off.
