Archie Sonic the Hedgehog Issue 81 was the eighty-first issue of the main Sonic the Hedgehog comic series.

Summary[]

Story One[]

"City Of Dreams..."

Amy Rose reflects on recent events while Nate Morgan introduces the Knothole Freedom Fighters to the artificial underground metropolis of the ancients: Station Square. The local police quickly surround the group of Mobians, but the lieutenant in charge of the squad recognizes Nate. Sally explains that they've come to warn them about a threat to the city. The lieutenant explains that they'll need to speak to the mayor, but suggests they rest at a local hotel for the night.

The next day, Mayor Bullyani assures the Freedom Fighters that they haven't had any problems with Dr. Robotnik and offers to take them on a tour through the city on their Rapid Transit System. The group eventually splinters; Amy goes on a shopping spree, Tails takes the Tornado out for a joyride and Sonic hangs out with the Human girls by the hotel pool. Meanwhile, Sally asks the mayor why his people haven't made contact with the outside world. Bullyani explains that their city had been self-sufficient and had no reason to interact with the rest of Mobius. He goes on to say that this has changed and offers a handshake to Sally.

Story Two[]

"All You Need Is A Bit of Chaos"

The previous night, Dr. Robotnik fed Chaos the Master Emerald shards he retrieved from the destroyed Chaos Chamber. Chaos began to grow, but soon stopped. Baffled, Robotnik analyzed his emerald shards and realized that most of the shards he had acquired were actually pieces of the Chaos Chamber's gemstone walls. He sent his E-100 Series robots to retrieve the remaining Master Emerald shards, as well as tasking them with retrieving an amphibian.

In the present, Knuckles flies into the Mysterious Cat Country, having lost sight of Robotnik's ship. He spots the Mystic Ruins and is struck with a sense of deja vu, wondering if Echidnas once lived there. Knuckles finds scattered shards of the Master Emerald on the ground nearby and sticks them in his gloves, but feels as if someone nearby is watching him.

Meanwhile, the Chaotix are transported from the Floating Island to the shores of the Cat Country by the inhospitable cat people. A white cat tells the others that she will ask the queen how to deal with the prisoners. When she arrives, the other cats greet her as the Cat Queen and place upon her the royal cloak. With her royal garment reclaimed, she explains that they will use their prisoners as an example to outsiders who wish to harm them.

Story Three[]

"A Rose Plucked"

Amy finishes up her shopping spree, amazed by how much fun she's having in an "Overlander" city, when she spots a green Flicky being chased by a robot. The robot shoots the Flicky down, causing it to crash into Amy. Fearing that Eggman must be after the poor bird, Amy tries to scare the robot away when the Piko Piko Hammer appears in her hand.

Amy uses her magical hammer to destroy the robot, but two more identical robots appear and gang up on her. They quickly grapple Amy and kidnap her, flying off into the sky. The Flicky flies after them, hoping to rescue its savior.

Bonus Features[]

Gag Strips[]

Off Panel

The editor complains at Sonic, saying he got in trouble for misusing the copier. Sonic asks why the editor is upset at him. The editor explains that Sonic has a distinctive butt, showing him the photocopied image of a mess of spines. Written by Michael Gallagher, Pencils by Dave Manak, Inks by Jim Amash.

Quotes[]

  • Knuckles: "Someone was either careless or in a real big hurry to leave these behind! The question is -- which one? That's for better brains than mine to figure out, I guess! I'm getting a headache playing detective!"

  • Amy: "Hey, you big lug -- didn't your maker teach you manners?"
  • ZERO: VRRRRT
  • Amy: "I guess not!"

Key Events[]

  • The Freedom Fighters meet Mayor Bullyani.
  • The E-100 robots are revealed to be searching for Master Emerald shards and amphibians.
  • Knuckles explores the Mystic Ruins while the Chaotix are taken to the Mysterious Cat Country.
  • Amy discovers her Piko Piko Hammer and is kidnapped by the ZERO robots.

Background Information[]

  • The Piko Piko Hammer makes its first appearance in this issue.
  • The opening spread of "City of Dreams..." contains an artistic oversight, where Amy's knee is drawn poking through her dress in a suggestive manner. Her knee is edited out of all reprints of this story.

Cameos & References[]

  • Background characters resembling Chun-Li and Cammy from Street Fighter, as well as Archie Comics' Jughead, can be seen around Station Square.
  • Mayor Bullyani shows the Freedom Fighters the Rapid Transit System, which is the main transport between Station Square and the Mystic Ruins in the Sonic Adventure video game.
  • The name of the third story is a famous line said by Romeo in the balcony scene of Willaim Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.
  • Some of Amy's lines in "A Rose Plucked" were taken directly from the opening of her story in the Sonic Adventure video game.

Errors[]

  • Mayor Bullyani is drawn with four fingers.
  • At the end of "City of Dreams...", Sonic is drawn accompanying Sally, Bunnie, and Nate Morgan off of the Rapid Transit System instead of Antoine.
  • Knuckles calls the shards of the Master Emerald "Chaos Emeralds".
  • While the purple E-100 Series robot seen in "All You Need Is A Bit of Chaos" appears to be E-105 Zeta, it is shown with the serial number "101" in StH #82's "Double-Crossed Circuits".
