Summary
Story One
- "The Discovery Zone"
Sonic the Hedgehog is teaching Tails how to improve his speed when they spot a strange apparition: a glowing, old-fashioned leisure suit with a hat that is moving on its own. Sonic directs his companion to inform the other Knothole Freedom Fighters while he pursues the suit, which leads him into a region of the Great Forest he has not previously visited. He follows it into a cave, and is then consumed by a massive flash of light. The flash transports Sonic to the Discovery Zone, specifically into the Wharf Side Dance Hall, where he finds himself awaiting an individual who contacted him by phone. He quickly notices her-and is instantly smitten-as she enters: Ms. Acorn, an alternate version of Sally Acorn. She sits down at his table, and after establishing his identity gets to the point: she needs him to retrieve her "friend" NICOLE, who has the information necessary to stop Dr. Robotnik's regime. In exchange, he will receive a substantial reward, and after she gives him a kiss on the cheek, he readily agrees.
After being informed of NICOLE's last known location-the Slippy Dippy Slide Factory-Sonic takes off to find her at super speed, making contact with his Uncle Chuck in order to get information on the place. Chuck informs him that the place has no history of Robotnik problems, and Sonic enters the place to find it a wreck, with spatters of robot oil everywhere. Quickly determining that Robotnik must be behind the mess, Sonic asks Chuck to see if he can track any robot signals leaving the area. As he wonders what NICOLE could know that's important enough to get Robotnik involved, Chuck informs him that he's detected four robots. Sonic takes off after them, quickly catching up to them and attacking before they can reach Robotnik. He uses a Power Ring to finish the job, and seizes a computer from them, which he discovers is none other than NICOLE. Noting that she's low on power, he sets out to meet Ms. Acorn in order to get to the bottom of the situation.
Back at the dance hall, Acorn is waiting for Sonic's return, worrying about both NICOLE and the heroic Hedgehog. Sonic then arrives and assures her that NICOLE is undamaged but needs power, which the Chipmunk remedies with a fresh battery. NICOLE reports that she is fine, to which a shadowy figure behind Sonic and Ms. Acorn remarks that he is lad, prompting Sonic to ask for a check. The figure, revealed as Robotnik with an escort of Combots, then informs Sonic that his employer is none other than Princess Sally Acorn, leader of the rebellion against Robotnik's empire. NICOLE, as it turns out, is carrying plans for his various facilities, which would cripple his operations-but as he has them in his sights, he sees no reason to spare them. Sonic is irked that Sally didn't inform him of her identity earlier, to which she retorts that he left too quickly for her to tell him anything more than NICOLE's location, and he relents and uses his Spin-Dash against the Combots. He is forced to stop, however, as the robots hold Sally at gunpoint, and the Princess then apologizes for not telling him everything. She reveals that she downloaded Robotnik's plans from inside the factory, only to be ambushed by robots, forcing her to make a retreat that caused her to leave NICOLE behind. Unable to risk going back herself, she had hired Sonic, counting on his super speed to pull off the assignment.
Robotnik gloats that his victory is sure, only for Sonic to pull a Power Ring out of his pocket and grab Sally from the midst of the robots. The two seemingly escape out the door, prompting Robotnik and his machines to follow, only to miss the pair come out from their hiding place under a table. Contacting Uncle Chuck to arrange a flight back to Sally's home in the forest-to which he responded by sending Tails and Rotor-the pair face their next obstacle: getting to the airport without being spotted. Sonic quickly solves the problem, uncovering a secret tunnel under the hall shown to him by a waiter named Sip. At the airport, Sonic initially refuses Sally's request that they team up, claiming that he's a solo act. She persists, claiming that he would be a valuable addition to the rebellion, and pointing out that Robotnik has undoubtedly taken steps to cover his vulnerabilities. When she also points out that one united team makes a lot more sense than two separate teams working towards the same goal, he relents, and joins the rebellion.
Sonic then emerges from the cave in a daze, and runs into the Freedom Fighters, who question what happened to him after expressing their worry. Still dazed, he replies that he's unsure of exactly what happened, but does recall that he unexpectedly found himself fighting Dr. Robotnik. Thinking he had been referring to Robotnik Prime, Rotor reminded him that Robotnik was deceased, prompting Sally to remark that she suspects Sonic has been eating too many chili dogs. While Rotor appears to feel that Sonic has gone crazy, Sonic simply winks covertly at the readers.
Story Two
- "First Contact"
In Knothole, Bunnie Rabbot and the other Freedom Fighters greet Sally as she enters, only to walk right past them without acknowledging their presence. A bit perturbed, the group assume that Sally's distracted by all the events that have been going on recently. Sally, meanwhile, activates NICOLE, and remarks to herself that if Uncle Chuck is right, she should now be able to make contact with the various Freedom Fighters around Mobius. Using one of Robotnik's satellites, she uses NICOLE to try and establish a communication link with the various cells around Mobius, similar to the network Eggman had with his Sub-Bosses. With the link established, Sally is able to communicate with Knuckles the Echidna and the Chaotix, Sealia of the Arctic Freedom Fighters, Lupe Wolf, and Erik Horse, amongst others. Sally then briefs them on past events, namely: Robotnik's takeover, his use of an Auto Automaton to impersonate Maximillian Acorn, his near assassination of the Princess herself, framing Sonic for the crime, and locating and occupying Knothole. Fortunately, Sonic managed to escape and convince Geoffrey of his innocence, teaming up with him and Knuckles to stop Robotnik.
With Robotnik's demise thanks to the Ultimate Annihilator, Sally's awakening from a coma, and the discovery of the true King Acorn, the Knothole Freedom Fighters have made plans to enter Robotropolis. However, she informs them that not all is well, and in response to Erik's inquiry she informs the various groups that the Annihilator has opened various Zones all around Mobius. She refers to Sonic's trip to the Discovery Zone and Knothole's own status in a time-displaced zone, and starts to warn the Freedom Fighters about them when the satellite uplink fails, cutting off the transmission. Hoping that she's provided sufficient warning, Sally leaves, with NICOLE remarking that they will have to wait to see if they were successful.
