Summary

Story One

"Ring Of Truth"

While traveling through a zone and collecting Power Rings, Sonic is ambushed by Dr. Robotnik, who then attempts to crush him. Sonic manages to elude him and makes for another cluster of rings, remarking as he grabs one that he has collected so many over the years that he no longer remembers the exact total. Robotnik, however, has kept track using his onboard computer, and realizes with some anxiety that Sonic has just obtained his One Billionth Power Ring. Sonic finds himself pulled into another dimension where he finds a gigantic Power Ring, atop which is perched one of the Ancient Walkers. The Walker compliments Sonic on his achievement, which an ignorant Sonic at first dismisses off hand. The Ring then grows super hot, forcing Sonic to drop it and then watch as it burns a circle into the ground. The center of the circle then rises, carrying Sonic high into the air, where the Walker flies up to join him. After announcing Sonic's capture of his Billionth Ring, the Walker watches as the ring slides up the pillar and knocks Sonic off, sending him plummeting down.

As Sonic draws close to a sea of green below him, his Ring grows to support him. Sonic is then surprised to learn that the sea around him is composed of Chaos Emeralds, immediately after which he finds himself facing another Ancient Walker. An angry Sonic demands answers, which the Walker replies to by slipping a ring onto his finger that consists of a Chaos Emerald and a Power Ring. Sonic puzzles over the connection between the two, and the Walker poses the "Riddle of the Rings" to him. The Hedgehog is able to deduce that the answer to the riddle is a chain of rings, which then emerges from the Chaos Emerald sea and drags Sonic into its depths.

Emerging from the bottom of the sea into another strange area, Sonic finds himself confronted with his One Billionth Ring grown to giant size. It rotates, forcing Sonic to run in order to stay inside it, and causing him to marvel as it reshapes itself into the symbol for eternity. The final Ancient Walker then appears before him, congratulating him and saying that he has earned the right to ask one question. Unfortunately, a startled Sonic misspeaks, and is then propelled from the strange realm of the Ancient Walkers, more confused than ever. He then emerges back into the zone where he started, the Ring providing him with a shield that enables him to cut through Robotnik's Robo-Pod. Sonic decides to take the Billionth Ring back to Knothole, where he has it mounted and shows it to Sally after reporting his strange journey. At the same time, Sonic becomes determined to unravel the mystery of Power Rings and Chaos Emeralds, believing them to be the key to Robotnik's defeat.

Story Two

"A Sense Of History" - Part Two

As he continues to search for the Chaotix and approaches Mount Fate, Knuckles recalls the story of his ancestors Edmund and Dimitri, two scientists who set out to return the Floating Island to Mobius' surface. Locating the chamber where the twelve Chaos Emeralds supporting the island's flight are contained, Dimitri marvels over the limitless power the gems produce. The two then present their proposal to the people of Echidnaopolis: to use their Chaos Syphon machine to gradually absorb the energies of the Emeralds, allowing the island to return to Mobius safely rather than plummeting as it would were the Emeralds to be removed. Despite Dimitri's confidence, the Chief Magistrate denies them permission to make the attempt, fearing that the attempt would endanger the people of the city. Furious, Dimitri returns to the Chaos Chamber with the Chaos Syphon and begins the process, ignoring Edmund's pleas and absorbing the energies of eleven of the twelve Emeralds. The Chief Magistrate and others arrive to help Edmund, and are surprised to see that one Emerald's power is apparently enough to keep the island afloat. However, they are then confronted by Dimitri, who has become a super-powered being, which he demonstrates by causing a tower to erupt from Angel Island's surface.
