Summary
Story One
- "Go Ahead, Mecha my Day: Part 1"
In Freedom HQ, Rotor is fitting a device into one of Sonic's shoes, much to Sonic's annoyance; his impatient foot-tapping is so fast it produces a cooling wind for Tails. The device works, as the Freedom Fighters are able to see whatever the camera takes in on a large computer screen. Rotor introduces his invention as the fiber optic Sonicam, a high speed camera, which quickly cures Sonic's boredom. As Sonic is questioning the capabilities of the new device, he ends up running into a wall; despite this, Sally is confident that the device will be extremely helpful. She then reveals that the Knothole Freedom Fighters may be in danger, as a new Zone portal has opened up, and the Zone must be investigated. As it turns out, the Collision Chaos Zone is a creation of Dr. Robotnik's, who deliberately allowed the Freedom Fighters to discover his portal so as to lure Sonic into a trap. In order to insure that Sonic comes into his trap, Robotnik reveals fan mail of Sonic's that he's stolen, to the shock of his Pirahna-bot. He opens a letter, which turns out to be from a young girl Hedgehog, and dispatches his latest robot-hidden by shadows-to abduct her for use as a hostage. He then sends a communication to the Knothole Freedom Fighters, and quickly accuses Sonic of being afraid to face the Collision Chaos Zone, which Sonic quickly denies.
Sally immediately suspects a trap, but is then forced to watch along with the other Freedom Fighters as the young Hedgehog-one Amy Rose-is handed over to Robotnik. Sonic is left furious as the transmission cuts out, while Robotnik complains about Amy's quills, though she is quick to respond that Sonic will make him feel even worse. What appears to be another Dr. Robotnik enters the room, but then stumbles and loses his mask, revealing himself to be Snively Robotnik in disguise. Robotnik then explains to his nephew that the plan is for him to follow Sonic in his Robo-Pod, burning up the Collision Chaos Zone behind the Hedgehog and forcing him to enter the Stardust Speedway Zone, where an even bigger challenge awaits. Furthermore, the decoy is intended to convince Sonic that Robotnik is following him, while in reality he'll be waiting to spring yet another trap.
- "Go Ahead, Mecha my Day: Part 2"
Shortly thereafter, Sonic is before the Knothole Council and demanding to be allowed to go and save Amy, whom he knows is one of his biggest fans. Sally agrees that they need to rescue her, but that they can't go in without knowing the risks. Sonic blows off the risk, adding that they can send Tails in to investigate. Despite Antoine's objections and Sally's reservations, the choice is approved, and Tails flies towards Robotropolis. Unfortunately, Robotnik is expecting him, and he is seized by a squad of SWATbots. Shortly afterwards, Sonic races to the Zone portal, unable to wait for Tails any longer, where he finds a floating monitor displaying live footage of Robotnik. The doctor reveals that Tails is now his prisoner along with Amy, and Sonic leaps into the zone to save them both. As Sonic rushes through the Zone, Robotnik contacts Snively, who begins burning up the zone behind him. Thanks to the Sonicam, the Freedom Fighters discover Robotnik and Snively's ruse, and wonder what their real plan is.
In the meantime, Sonic has made his way to the next zone, and is wondering why it's been so easy so far. He is then surprised by the appearance of Amy's mysterious captor, who is none other than...
- "Go Ahead, Mecha my Day: Part 3"
Metal Sonic, who claims that Sonic has no chance of defeating him. Sonic claims otherwise, when Metal Sonic reminds him that Tails and Amy are at the finish line. The Hedgehog considers doubling back, only to spot the disguised Snively entering the Zone, forcing him to confront his robotic double. At the finish line, Robotnik notes that Sonic has "engaged" Metal Sonic, upsetting Amy, who responds to Tails' inquiry that she "was hoping someday Sonic would get engaged to [her]!" Back in Knothole, the Freedom Fighters are unable to follow Sonic's confrontation due to interference the Zone is causing with the Sonicam, and Sally decides to head for his last known location. Sonic and Metal Sonic race through the zone, the former unaware that the real Robotnik is waiting for him at the finish line. The doctor has a Crabmeat examine the finish line, only to spring his last-intended trap for Sonic: a crushing mechanism that squashes the robot, and which Robotnik hops will do the same to Sonic.
- "Go Ahead, Mecha my Day: Part 4"
Further back in the Zone, Metal Sonic accuses Sonic of being exhausted, but the Hedgehog refuses to be stopped. Metal Sonic pulls a double cross, having replaced himself with a hologram in order to activate a speed bump. Near the finish line, Rotor and Sally have flown in using a plane, from which Sally jumps in order to land near Robotnik. Sonic and Metal Sonic reach the final leg of the race, and Sonic whips out his secret weapon: the Figure Eight Super Peel Out, which allows him to move even faster than normal. Metal Sonic tries to keep up, but the effort causes it to overheat, and its body starts melting. Rotor takes the plane and shoots down Snively, while Sally strikes Robotnik from above with a kick. As a result of his distraction, Sonic makes it across the finish line without the trap being sprung, to Robotnik's frustration. Sonic reveals that he saw the trap coming, and agrees to stand under the archway so Robotnik can activate it. Robotnik does so, only to learn that Sonic's speed is so great that he is even able to get out from under the arch in time. Unable to believe it, Robotnik stands under the arch to examine it for problems, only to have it brought down on top of him. The heroes celebrate their victory, Rotor having captured Snively and Tails and Amy having been released, while Robotnik groans "I hate that Hedgehog!"

- Sonic meets Amy Rose and the original Metal Sonic.
Background Information
- This is the series' first milestone issue.
- This issue is a comic adaptation to the videogame Sonic CD.
- This issue introduces the original Metal Sonic, but mistakenly refers to him as Mecha Sonic. This would later be retconned into his proper designation as distinguished from the Eggman Metal Sonic variants.
- A Sega Saturn logo and Virtua Fighter character can be seen while Sonic is racing Metal Sonic.
- When Robotnik is first seen in the issue, he is in a scene that pays tribute to the Wizard of Oz: it features a large version of his head with flame pillars to either side of it, and parodies the lines of Oz, the Great and Terrible.
- The stolen "Sonic Gram" fan mail is in a bag marked with U.S. Post and is addressed to Archie Comics, an instance of the comic breaking the fourth wall.
- Sonic addresses Robotnik as Flabio, a nod to Fabio.
- In the background brief cameos of Espio and Vector can be seen in the Stardust Speedway Zone, before their canonical first appearance in the Knuckles Chaotix Special.
- Sally briefly thinks about someone known as "Princess Di", which is a reference to the late Princess Diana of Wales.
- In the Sonic archives version of the chapter, this is changed to "Princess Leia", an obvious reference to the Star Wars character
- Parts 3 and 4 of this issue were later reprinted in SU: #50, with the exception of the last panel.
