SummaryEdit

Story OneEdit

"The Return"
In the future Mobius (first seen in the 'Princess Sally's Conclusion' in The Sonic in Your Face special) Sonic and Sally are out for a walk with their children Sonia and Manik. Sally is growing concerned by the changing weather while Sonic just waves it off. Suddenly, a bolt of lightning strikes the ground and Robotnik is seen for a brief period. In another flash of lightning, Robotnik disappears again. Sally starts to worry, but Sonic just waves it off again, though not without doubts in his mind.
Robotnik suddenly finds himself transported onto a space station ran by Robo-Robotnik (not the one from issue # 19, but the Robo-Robotnik who will eventually become Dr. Eggman in issue # 75.) Robo-Robotnik reveals to Dr. Robotnik that he was trasported to an alternate timeline by E.V.E. (in issue # 21); Robo-Robotnik also tells Dr. Robotnik that in order to best Sonic in his dimension, he had to submit himself to roboticization. To save himself, he uploaded his core memory into the space station (which was unfortunately incompleted), leaving Robo-Robotnik forced to operate the station's functions until his systems wore down. Robotnik delivers a fine motivational speech and inspires Robo-Robotnik to keep trying, saying that he will evolve into the next level someday. Robo-Robotnik then agrees to send Robotnik back to his own timeline via the Trans-Dimensional Highway.
Meanwhile, Snively is moping and crying because even though Robotnik is gone and Snively is in charge, he finds out that he has no idea what to do, given that Robotnik had withheld so much information from him. (Quite possibly leading to Snively's inner loathing of Dr. Robotnik that has driven him to betray the doctor several times in the future.) In his frustration, he cries out the words: "To think that Sonic has finally won it all!" inadvertently activating Operation: Wasteland, a failsafe program Robotnik created just in case Sonic and the Freedom Fighters ever did defeat him, thus activating all Swatbots & commanding them to destroy every square inch of Mobius, turning it into a wasteland by destroying everything and everyone (including Snively) in their path.
Just when things looked dark for both Snively and the Freedom Fighters-- who all seemed outnumbered and overpowered-- Robotnik returns and begrudgedly aborts Operation: Wasteland, saving Snively, himself, Mobius and-- much to his dismay-- the Freedom Fighters. In the end, Snively asks Robotnik how he thought Sonic probably felt knowing that the doctor just saved his worst enemy's life, in which Robotnik replies: "Letting Sonic stew over that thought should cripple his ego."

Background InformationEdit

  • This issue introduced the second Robo-Robotnik. Another version of Robo-Robotnik appeared three issues earlier in Sonic the Hedgehog #19. Much confusion arose over whether or not these two Robo-Robotniks were the same person or different ones. Former writer Ken Penders, who wrote both stories, stated on his message board the Robo-Robotnik seen in this issue was intended to be the same one seen in Sonic the Hedgehog #19.(1) Former writer Karl Bollers firmly established the two as the same person in Sonic the Hedgehog #75 and it was again well established in Dr. Eggman's data file in Sonic the Hedgehog #108. Despite all this, current writer Ian Flynn has repeatedly stated that he views the Robo-Robotnik of Sonic the Hedgehog #19 and Sonic the Hedgehog #22 to be different people, and that this is to be reflected in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog Who's Who encyclopedia. As a result, this website considers that these two Robo-Robotniks are different people.
