Summary

Story One

"Night of a Thousand Sonics"

Sonic and the Freedom Fighters witness the opening of the Cosmic Interstate portal with a cyborg version of Sonic popping out in front of them. This Cyborg Sonic explains that he is from an alternate universe (Zone) and has come to seek their help. He tells them his story of how in this alternate Zone, his Dr. Robotnik turned the Freedom Fighters into Cyborgs in an attempt to defeat them. However, this transformation actually gave the Freedom Fighters the upper hand in battle, so Robotnik decided to completely roboticize himself in order to fight back. This turned the tide in Robo-Robotnik's favor, and the resistance was defeated. Cyborg Sonic managed to escape, and fled to the Cosmic Interstate to search for help.

After hearing Cyborg Sonic's story, Sonic agrees to help and uses the Cosmic Interstate to gather other versions of himself from their various Zones in order to help fight this new menace. Dr. Ivo Robotnik lends a hand, stating that Robo-Robotnik's presence is a threat to everyone. Robotnik concludes that the only way to fight Robo-Robotnik is by obtaining the Giant's Hand in the Neutral Zone coinciding with the Cosmic Interstate.

As Sonic and his other selves go to retrieve the Hand, Robo-Robotnik locates and recruits Evil Sonic from Anti-Mobius. Evil Sonic and an army of Shadow Swat Bots are able to find the Giant's Hand along group of Sonics. During the confrontation The Hand is teleported to Robo Robotnik, who then uses it to create the Giant Borg Battle Suit. Robo-Robotnik then uses the Giant Borg to go on a destructive rampage of Mobius Prime. However, Sonic and his army of alternate selves make a last stand against the Giant Borg, finally destroying it and Robo-Robotnik.

In the end, each of the Sonics takes a piece of the fragmented Giant Borg to their Zones to prevent anyone from ever reassembling and using it again.

Quotes

Key Events

  • The Freedom Fighters encounter Robo-Robotnik for the first time and Cyborg Sonic for the only time so far.

Background Information

  • This issue introduced the first Robo-Robotnik. Another version of Robo-Robotnik appeared three issues later in Sonic the Hedgehog #22. Much confusion arose over whether or not these two Robo-Robotniks were the same person or different ones. Former writer Ken Penders, who wrote both stories, stated on his message board the Robo-Robotnik seen in this issue was intended to be the same one seen in Sonic the Hedgehog #22.(1) Former writer Karl Bollers firmly established the two as the same person in Sonic the Hedgehog #75 and it was again well established in Dr. Eggman's data file in Sonic the Hedgehog #108. Despite all this, current writer Ian Flynn has repeatedly stated that he views the Robo-Robotnik of Sonic the Hedgehog #19 and Sonic the Hedgehog #22 to be different people, and that this is to be reflected in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog Who's Who encyclopedia. As a result, this website considers that these two Robo-Robotniks are different people.
  • Among the numerous Sonic look-a-likes are three parodies of other super heroes: A Wolverine-styled Sonic (complete with claws), a Bat-Sonic, and a Human Torch parody (even colored like the original Human Torch in the first Fantastic Four issue)
