Archie Sonic the Hedgehog Issue 13 was the thirteenth issue of the main Sonic the Hedgehog comic series.

Summary

Story One

"This Island Hedgehog" - Part One

Sonic and Tails are flying in Sonic's biplane, looking for Dr. Robotnik's hovercraft, when they see an island floating in the sky. Curious about what keeps the island afloat, they decide to check it out. However, a mysterious figure shoots a rocket at their plane. Tails saves Sonic using his flying powers and they land on the island unharmed. Sonic suspects Robotnik is behind this and looks for natives, hoping to ask for help.

An Assaulting Batter Blimp attacks them, and Sonic and Tails retreat into a nearby pool of water. They end up in an underwater maze filled with spikes and traps and are sucked into a giant drain. Sonic and Tails lose consciousness, and wake up to find themselves tied up in a dark room. It turns out Knuckles the Echidna is their captor. Knuckles tells them that his "pal", Dr. Robotnik, informed him that Sonic and Tails would come to steal the Chaos Emerald that keeps his island afloat.

"This Island Hedgehog" - Part Two

Robotnik watches from a hidden camera and reveals he tricked Knuckles into capturing Sonic and Tails in order to steal the Chaos Emerald himself and use its energies to recharge his hovercraft. Knuckles, meanwhile, offers Sonic and Tails a deal: if they leave the island in ten minutes, he'll leave them alone. They decide to head out and find a way to prove Robotnik is behind the misunderstanding. Robotnik contacts Knuckles, furious that he let them get away. Knuckles tells him to mind his own business. Unbeknownst to Knuckles, Crabmeat stole the Chaos Emerald and brought it to Robotnik, who begins preparations to leave the island.

Knuckles decides to intercept Sonic and Tails and takes a secret passageway to his emerald's hiding place, but once he arrives he finds that the emerald is already gone. Sonic and Tails arrive seconds later, and Knuckles realizes that Robotnik double-crossed him. Robotnik, Crabmeat, and a SWATbot are aboard Robotnik's hovercraft, heading for Robotropolis. Suddenly, Sonic zips by and takes the emerald from Robotnik. Robotnik sends his SWATbots at the heroes and manages to escape. With the Badniks defeated and Robotnik gone, Sonic and Tails wonder how they'll leave the island. Knuckles mentions that while Sonic and Tails were unconscious, he picked up the pieces of their biplane. Sonic quickly puts the plane back together. As they leave, Knuckles mumbles that he'll probably see them again.

Story Two

"Space in yo' Face" - Part One

Tails and Bunnie are watching Sonic use his Sonic Spin to carve a statue of Antoine, when Sally and Rotor arrive with alarming news. Sally heard Robotnik bragging about a space weapon called Robostorm, capable of firing rays at Mobius with the ability to roboticize everything within a hundred-mile radius.

The Freedom Fighters travel to Robotropolis, where they find Robostorm. Sonic distracts the SWATbots in the area while the Freedom Fighters enter Robostorm. Before they can sabotage the machine, Dr. Robotnik and Snively arrive. They escape by piloting the Robostorm into space. Robotnik and Snively are in hot pursuit, and Snively blasts Robostorm with a de-energizer. The Freedom Fighters are unharmed, but Robostorm is powerless. Robotnik gives them an ultimatum: allow him to take them back to Mobius to be Roboticized, or be left to drift in space forever.

"Space in yo' Face" - Part Two

Sonic and Sally decide to use the Robostorm's auxilary power to land on a nearby moon. The heroes quickly find out that the moon is made almost entirely of muck and that escaping will be difficult. Robotnik and Snively are also stuck in the mud, but their ship transforms. Their giant walker can traverse the gunk easily and proceeds to kick the Robostorm. However, it turns out the Freedom Fighters were not in the ship. Robotnik chases after them.

Sonic wonders how they can possibly escape, and remembers something Bunnie said back in Robotropolis: "Robotnik really loves himself! Everything he builds looks like him!" Sonic gets an idea, goes into a super sonic spin, and carves a giant statue of Robotnik out of muck. Robotnik, unable to resist, gets out and walks over to have a closer look. The statue falls on Robotnik. Snively jumps out to save Robotnik, and the Freedom Fighters steal their ship and return to Knothole.

Quotes

  • Knuckles: "Ahhh... A couple of unwanted guests! Time to roll out the unwelcome mat!"

  • Knuckles: "We don't take kindly to trespassers here on the floating island, but we hate would-be thieves even worse!"

  • Tails: "I know we're innocent, Sonic, but how do we prove it?"
  • Sonic: "Don't worry, Tails! If things run true to form, Robotnik will do it for us!"

  • Sonic: "Hold still while I carve your blockhead... I mean, your head from a block, Antoine."

  • Robotnik: "Well, well! The Freedom Fighters are stuck in the muck, Snively!"
  • Snively: "Excuse me your Grossness, but so are we!"
  • Robotnik: "Correct, Snively, but you're forgetting that our ship is a transformer!"

Key Events

  • Sonic and Tails meet Knuckles for the first time.
  • Dr Robotnik's doomsday weapon, the Robostorm, is defeated by being drained of its power.
  • Robotnik and Snively are stranded on Muckury.

Background Information

  • This issue features the comic tie-in to the videogame Sonic 3.
  • Knuckles the Echidna makes his debut in this issue.
  • This issue's depiction of how an emerald keeps the island floating is inconsistent with later stories in the series.
  • The "one hundred moons of Mobius" were inconsistent with the later revelation that Mobius is a future version of Earth. It was revealed in The Complete Sonic Comic Encyclopedia that the Overlanders produced one-hundred artificial moons as part of a massive project.
  • In "This Island Hedgehog", Sonic displays an ability that seems to be a combination of the Lightning Shield and the Insta-Shield ability, as it appears when he's in a jumping position, but fizzles out when he hits the water.

Cameos & References

  • The title "This Island Hedgehog" is a play on the movie This Island Earth, a popular 50's sci-fi movie that regained prominence when it appeared on the movie Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie.
  • In "This Island Hedgehog", when Sonic and Tails escape from their prison cave, they pass by a dropping gate and a sign that reads "Gotham City: 14 miles", a nod to the 1966 Batman TV series. A second nod is made when Crabmeat proclaims "Atomic batteries to power! Turbines to speed!", which is what Robin would say before he and Batman would rocket out of the Batcave with the Batmobile.

Errors

  • The ship Robotnik uses to escape from Angel Island changes its appearance.
