SummaryEdit

Story OneEdit

"A Timely Arrival"

Dr. Ivo Robotnik fumes as he watches Sonic the Hedgehog pile up the parts of his defeated robots, but is then inspired as he notes that Sonic defeats his schemes "Time after time...after TIME." He determines to construct a time machine, and laughs triumphantly, confusing Sonic, who is too far away to hear his musings. Sonic then returns to Knothole, where Tails informs him that Sally Acorn wants to show them something on the television. Seeing Sally weeping, Sonic thinks something horrible must have occurred, but is then informed by Tails that she is watching a soap opera. An embarrassed Sally then switches over to the news, where Robotnik Belly Vision is broadcasting footage of Robotnik's latest scheme: using a giant chainsaw to cut down the Great Forest. Furious at the attack, Sonic goes into a Spin-Dash, and creates such friction that he burns a hole through Freedom HQ's roof to the surface.

Sonic arrives and challenges Robotnik, only to be zapped by his Time Teleporter machine, which was built into the chainsaw. Sonic is then hurtled through time to Prehistoric Mobius, where he is scooped up by one of the resident Mobosaurs, a Pterodactyl. A Spin-Dash frees him, only to send him plummeting towards the mouth of a large carnivorous Mobosaur. However, after landing in the mouth, he smashes the Mobosaur's teeth, enabling him to escape. He is then surprised to meet Sonugh the Boghog, so-called because of the lack of any hedges. He then offers to show Sonic around, and surprises the Hedgehog by taking off as quickly as Sonic is able to, clearly indicating a kinship. As they speed towards Sonugh's home, they are spotted by his nemesis, Ivo Robughnik, Robotnik's caveman ancestor. After briefly lamenting the lack of robot slaves to do his dirty work, Robughnik begins hurling rocks at the pair using a catapult, just as Sonugh finishes telling Sonic about the crazed caveman.

The pair are seemingly crushed by a rock, and Robughnik celebrates his victory; in the present, meanwhile, Robotnik is likewise gleeful over his being rid of Sonic. He is observed by a Crabmeat, who is stunned to see Robotnik breaking his own rules, and after the robot expresses doubts about its ability to forget seeing Robotnik doing so despite his orders, he remedies the problem by crushing it. He then prepares to cut the ribbon at the display of his Time Teleporter, which he is boasting of as what enabled him to defeat Sonic, only for the Knothole Freedom Fighters to storm the exhibit. Back on Prehistoric Mobius, Sonugh and Sonic are still alive, Sonugh having dug them into an underground tunnel network that is home not only to him but to his teammates, the Prehistoric Freedom Fighters. Recognizing the group as counterparts to his own team, Sonic suggest that they go outside, but the group are horrified at the suggestion.

Sonugh then reveals that the Freedom Fighters intend to hide even deeper underground, and it's Sonic's turn to be horrified. Fearing that he'll end up becoming "Sonic the Mole" if his ancestor remains underground, Sonic determines that Sonugh and the others need to live outside, and decides to teach them how to adapt. He then drags Salugh and the others outside and shows them how to plant hedges that they can use for concealment from various threats. As the Freedom Fighters celebrate their new lease on life, Sonugh notes that his teammates do indeed seem happier on the surface. Unexpectedly, Sonic is then whisked back to his own time, the Freedom Fighters having stolen Robotnik's teleporter to bring him home. Back on Prehistoric Mobius, Salugh is getting used to ordering the others around, and Sonugh is beginning to regret his descendant's visit.

Story TwoEdit

"Bold-Headed Eagle"

Sonic's super speed carries him off a cliff as a result of a shortcut attempt gone awry, and fails to grab a handhold on the sheer surface. Sonic lands in a large nest, which turns out to be home to Cyril Eagle, who is rather irate at the intrusion. Upon learning that Sonic was trying to avoid Robotnik's forces, Cyril reveals that the tyrant was responsible for turning his Eagle Flock into Robians. Cyril himself survived by hiding out, an act that he now views as cowardice, and has since given up flying out of shame. Sonic determines to help the self-proclaimed "Last Eagle on Mobius", unaware that Robotnik and Snively Robotnik have detected several lifeforms in their area. The two head out to investigate using Robotnik's Rambot, while Sonic encourages Cyril to try flying again.

The eagle makes an attempt, but falls, managing to land on a branch far below. He laments his failure and begins to contemplate surrendering to Robotnik, only to be hailed by unexpected visitors: survivors of his flock who likewise escaped Robotnik. Realizing how close he came to giving up when all was not lost as he thought, Cyril feels that he owes Sonic. The Hedgehog, meanwhile, is worried by Cyril's disappearance, fearing that the Eagle has been spotted or captured. Robotnik and Snively then arrive in the Rambot, and Robotnik warns Sonic against taking any action unless he wants to be hit by the vehicle. Snively tries to inform Robotnik of something, but is silenced by Robotnik as the doctor questions Sonic. Sonic refuses to talk, and the Rambot's head knocks him off the cliff. Fortunately, Cyril swoops in and saves him in the nick of time, while Robotnik finally learns what Snively was trying to tell him: the cliff is too unstable to support the Rambot adequately, and is now dangerously cracked. Cyril then flies Sonic back to Knothole in gratitude for his help.

Story ThreeEdit

"The Lynx is a Jinx"

While evacuating Mobini from an area of the Great Forest to prevent Robotnik from turning them into robots, the Freedom Fighters discover a Mobian who refuses to come down from his perch up in a tree. Sonic rushes up the trunk to speak to the straggler, who introduces himself as "Larry Lynx-Super Jinx", who brings bad luck to everyone he meets. Sonic dismisses the notion, only for the tree limb they're standing on to break off and land on top of the Freedom Fighters. The injured group head off for Knothole, with Sally ordering Sonic to take Larry elsewhere just in case there is truth to his claims of being a jinx. A despondent Larry tries to convince Sonic to leave him alone, but the Hedgehog refuses, even when several trees inexplicably dump their apples on top of him. Undeterred, Sonic determines to find Larry a good place to hide until he can fix his bad luck, only to come upon the Freedom Fighters, who have been captured by SWATbots.

Upon realizing that the heroes are restrained by steel collars held in place by a magnetic field, Larry blames himself for the disaster. However, Sonic then gets the idea to use Larry's jinx effects to their benefit, and sends him out to meet the SWATbots. Two SWATbots move in on him, only to crash into each other instead, while their leader attempts to hit Larry with a magnetic blast to knock him out. The blast misses, and ricochets off rocks to strike the robot, allowing Sonic to seize the device from him. Robotnik himself then arrives and prepares to mow Sonic down with his vehicle, but Larry rushes to help his friend, and the doctor loses control and misses Sonic, crashing into a rock wall. Sonic, confident that they've broken Larry's bad luck streak, decides to put it to the test; the Lynx subsequently defeats Rotor 50 times in a row at chess.

Background InformationEdit

  • This issue introduces both Cyril and Larry Lynx. Both characters would later join with Sally's Trainees from the Princess Sally Miniseries to forge the Substitute Freedom Fighters in Sonic Live.
  • Since this comic takes place before issue #19: Night of a Thousand Sonics, it is possible Robotnik could have sent Sonic into an alternate universe by mistake, (thinking that he had actually sent him to the past), where Sonugh was actually an other world version of himself, in leiu of being his ancestor. Although it would have been a billion to one coincidence, this seems to be more likely since the revelation of the Xorda's Gene Bombs detonating on modern society long after Sonic would have traveled 40,000 years in the past, when animals did not possess human DNA (StH: #125).
