Archie Sonic X Issue 23 was the twenty-third issue of the spin-off Sonic X comic series.

Summary[]

Official Solicitation[]

Ever since he came to Earth, Sonic has been saving the day and becoming a worldwide hero! But not everyone is happy with our hedgehog's heroics - and they're going to do something about it! What is this alliance of evil bent on Sonic's destruction, and where have we seen its members before? Can Sonic unravel the mystery before it is too late?

Story One[]

"Hedgehogging Their Bets"

While out on an evening run, Sonic is suddenly attacked by a strange group of robots. Naturally, Sonic expects it to be Eggman's doing, but the robots instead dose him with knockout gas and sends the hedgehog out for a nap.

When he wakes up, Sonic finds himself shackled and trapped in a strange room, where a group of strange men glare back at him from behind a desk. Asking for an explanation, each man introduces himself. The first is Card Passer, formally of G.U.N. and a high-ranking commander who led an attack on Dr. Eggman, only to be stripped of his rank by the President for acting without his authorization. The second, Hector Dragg, tells of how he used to be on the Speed Team and competed with Sam Speed for being the fastest man in town. He blames Sonic for shafting him to third and driving him into recklessness, forcing Sam to kick him off the team.

Next is Howard Watcher, who used to be the warden of Prison Island until Sonic escaped and the island was blown up. Dr. Kai Narasu then blames Sonic for ruining his career by disproving his old theories about Sonic being a robot, thus shaming him out of his tenure. The largest man in the room, Li Yan, tells that, while he cares nothing about Sonic, he has desired vengeance against his friend Knuckles for a past humiliation.

Finally, Sonic meets with Jerome Wise, who was once the President's Aide until the President learned of a backroom deal Jerome had once made with Dr. Eggman. Having since lived on the streets until meeting with everybody else, Jerome announces to Sonic that he is the prisoner of the Society for Observing and Neutralizing Interdimensional Creatures and Xenomorphs, or S.O.N.I.C.X.

Naturally, Sonic laughs at how ridiculous the name sounds, making everybody glare at Jerome (apparantly, he had spent all night on the Internet coming up with the name), then busts out of his chains. Despite the best efforts of the base security, Sonic hijacks a flying robot drone and escapes back to Thorndyke Mansion, just in time to spot Chris assembling a search party for him.

At dinner that night, Sonic tells everybody of his interesting evening. Though everybody thinks it's no big deal, Sonic does show concern at knowing that all those people could organize so well to catch him. Meanwhile, the society members are currently being chastised for their failure by their leader, a mysterious man known only as the Organizer.

Quotes[]

  • Sonic: Aw! That was too easy! Now I'm ready for my next--

  • Sonic : (his reaction to S.O.N.I.C.X.) BWA-HA-HA-HA! So you guys are my fan club?!? I don't know what the "X" is for, but--AH HA HA!

Key Events[]

  • The S.O.N.I.C.X. organization makes its first appearance.

Background Information[]

  • In the anime, Card Passer's attack on Eggman took place during the time where Sonic and his friends were preparing to return to their own world. However, while they did go home shortly after in the anime, the comic implies that they have remained on Earth since the attack. This is explained by writer Ian Flynn as being due to time slowing down (in the anime, it was discovered that Earth and Sonic's world where merging together, causing time to slow down to a halt, which could only be stopped by having Sonic and the other Mobian inhabitants returning home).
  • It is interesting to note that the name of the shadowy organization is the name of the comic series, "Sonic X".
  • When Sonic is attacked by the strange group of robots, two street names appear references the writer (Ian Flynn) and the penciller (Tracy Yardley): Flynn Street and Yardley Road
  • It is noted that the flashbacks of some of the S.O.N.I.C.X members were based on what happened in the anime itself.
    • Li Yan appeared in the anime episode "The Adventures of Knuckles and Hawk" and got "hollered" by Knuckles who with Hawk got sent in a jail cell while hoping to discover a Chaos Emerald.
    • Howard Watcher appeared in episode 35 as the Prison Island warden as the place blew up.
    • Kai Narasu appeared very briefly in episode 2 of the anime as a scientist who appeared during a news report about Sonic showing up in the city, explaining his theory that Sonic was actually a machine.
    • Jerome Wise appeared regularly in the anime as the presidents aide, a job he was fired from after he was discovered to be conspiring with Doctor Eggman, at which point he's reduced to living on the streets.
    • Hector Dragg had an extremely minor role in the first episode of the anime, where he could be seen as one of the members of Sam Speed's S-Team.
    • Card Passers unauthorised attack on Eggman (as mentioned above), occured in episode 50 of the anime.
