Summary

Story One

"Law of the Land"

Sonic and Sally are walking through the forest, with Sonic remarking on his boredom because of their recent peace. Sally chides his negativity, and Sonic admits that he should be thankful, when the pair are interrupted by the opening of a Zone Portal. A pair of Echidna Enforcers emerge, placing Sonic under arrest and knocking Sally unconscious to prevent her interference. Sonic is quick to claim innocence as they drag him through the portal to Litigopolis, where they claim he is to face justice for the offense of causing "extreme mental anguish and permanent emotional scarring!" He is led towards Litigopolis' version of the royal castle, and questions whether King Maximillian Acorn is to be his judge, only to learn that the king is serving a ridiculously lengthy sentence of his own for "ruler malpractice." The castle is now home to J.U.D.G.E.-the Judgmental Unrelenting Digitized Government Enforcer-whose computer avatar is revealed to be the spitting image of Dr. Robotnik.

Sonic is then surprised by the appearance of two more "familiar faces": first Johnny Snively, J.U.D.G.E.'s right-hand man and Sonic's prosecutor, who claims that Sonic's case will be a simple matter. The second familiar face begs to differ, as Sally McAcorn volunteers for the defense, while Sonic remarks that Sally's various counterparts seem to be more attractive every time he travels to a new zone. Ten hours later, Sonic is let out on bail and remarks that it took a long time, only for McAcorn to remark that it didn't take as long as it normally does. Sonic then questions the legal system of the zone, and McAcorn quickly fills him in on how Litigopolis game to be. Previously, there was little to no respect for law and order, and so Litigopolis' King Acorn had invoked harsher laws and penalties. Unfortunately, both criminals and everyday citizens were affected, to the point that many refused to leave their homes for fear of breaking the law.

Eventually, the king commissioned Robotnik Enterprises to create J.U.D.G.E. to serve as an enforcer and record keeper, only for it to take over the government. Echidna Enforcers replaced the police, and the king was imprisoned for failing to deal with the crime rate more quickly. Sonic then questions why no one has tried to turn J.U.D.G.E off, only to learn that the citizens are too scared, prompting him to rush off to make the attempt personally. Unfortunately, Sonic's attempt to infiltrate the facility sets of the security system, and Johnny and the Enforcers arrive to place him in custody once again. After reviewing what has transpired previously, Sonic makes his escape, much to the chagrin of Lieutenant Knuckles. Johnny remarks that they will recapture him soon, while Sonic hides out at McAcorn's office, where she remarks that the case against him is even steeper now. She then reveals evidence of his innocence: a video of Evil Sonic committing the crime of which Sonic has been accused, taken by one of the many amateur cameramen working to record potential crimes in the city. The Hedgehog from Moebius escaped through a Zone Portal that afterwards collapsed, and when J.U.D.G.E. recreated it and sent the Enforcers through they ended up grabbing Sonic instead.

McAcorn notes that the whole case is a matter of mistaken identity, and would have been cleared up easily had it not been for Sonic's attempt to shut down J.U.D.G.E. Now he is to be tried for high treason, and Sonic agonizes, wishing he could do something. While McAcorn recommends that he stay in hiding until they can figure out how to get him home, she notes that if he committed another crime "the J.U.D.G.E. would probably pop a gasket!" Inspired by her words, Sonic sets off on a crime spree, and ends up committing 2000 crimes in the space of a single hour. As he calculated, J.U.D.G.E. can't keep up, and the computer explodes. Sonic congratulates himself on his triumph, only for Lieutenant Knuckles to arrive to arrest him. However, the Echidna is laid low by a blow from McAcorn's briefcase, and McAcorn remarks that "a girl's gotta know how to defend herself" in response to Sonic's inquiry about where she learned that move. While Johnny is himself arrested, McAcorn thanks Sonic for destroying J.U.D.G.E. and giving Litigopolis an opportunity to adopt a fair legal system. She then questions how he'll return home with the Zone Portal technology destroyed, only for Zonic to arrive and provide the answer. McAcorn prepares to reward the excited Sonic with a kiss, but Zonic sends him home before he can, despite Sonic's objection that he was "about to finally get the girl!"
