Summary
Story One
- "Lost Paradise" Part One of Three: "The Phantom City"
The story opens with Vector the Crocodile by himself swimming in a stream. He sees a Dark Legionnaire on the surface and decides to attack first. He springs out of the water hoping to get the Legionnaire by surprise. However the hooded figure ducks out of the way of Vector's attack. Then the Legionnaire knocks Vector out cold and proceeds on their mission to attack Knuckles the Echidna.
The Legionnaire tries to sneak up on Knuckles while he practices his meditation with Archimedes the Fire Ant. Knuckles notices though and strikes at the Legionnaire first. Knuckles manages to pin the Legionnaire down to the ground and removes the figure's hood. He is shocked to discover that his attacker is a girl. The pink furred, purple eyed echidna uses this moment to her advantage. She punches Knuckles hard and the two resume their battle. After their fight ends Knuckles demands that the female Echidna tell him the whereabouts of the rest of the Dark Legion.
The echidna introduces herself as Julie-Su and explains that she got separated from the Dark Legion when their base blew up. Before Knuckles can question her any further; the Chaotix show up. They tell Knuckles that they've been experiencing some earthquakes in the Marble Garden Zone. Knuckles decides that he and Archimedes will investigate to try to find out what is causing these earthquakes. Julie-Su insists that she should be allowed to come along. Although he still doesn't trust her, Knuckles reluctantly agrees to let her tag along.
After walking around for hours they finally feel a tremor. Once the island stops shaking they come across a city that disappears then reappears before their very eyes. The trio heads into the city and there they discover that it is the fabled city of Echidnaopolis. A busy and bustling place that is full of other echidnas.
Knuckles wonders what exactly is going on when he hears a voice call out his name. To his shock Knuckles sees that the voice belongs to his very mother, Lara-Le. He tells her that he thought that she was dead. Lara-Le is disarrayed, she believes that Locke told him that. Knuckles explains that his father use to be the only other echidna he knew and that he never thought to question him about it.
Before the two can continue their talk the city and all of its inhabitants disappear. The ground splits open causing Knuckles to fall but he is saved by Julie-Su who grabs on to his arm to prevent him from falling any further. He pulls himself up to the surface, claiming that he could have saved himself. The city reappears again and the three head back inside.
They see the echidna residents panicking while fleeing for their lives. They go to look for Lara-Le for answers, along the way Julie-Su points out a stone statue of a guardian named Hawking. Underneath the statue is a plaque, which states that Hawking is the "Creator of the Hyper Zone Projector". Knuckles summarizes that this Hyper Zone Projector might have something to do with what is currently going on within the city.
Before they can begin their search they are interrupted by a brown furred, black haired echidna named Constable Remington. He sees the three as intruders, surrounds them with the Echidna Security Team and demands that they better provide some answers as to why they're in the city.
