Archie Knuckles the Echidna Issue 24 was the twenty-fourth issue of the spin-off Knuckles the Echidna comic series.

Summary[]

Frontis Quotation[]

"It is my conviction that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself -- nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert defeat into victory. In every dark hour of our society, a leadership of frankness and vigor has met with that understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential in achieving the desired goal. I am convinced that you will again give that support to the leadership in these critical days."

Spectre, on the eve of rallying the citizenry against the Dark Legion during their takeover of Echidnaopolis

Story One[]

Dark Alliance: Part Three of Three - "Primary Evil"

Spectre confronts Locke and Archimedes in the Chaos Chamber, informing them that Haven has been captured by the Dark Legion. Locke refuses to help him recapture their base of operations, having just learned that Knuckles is being held captive by Dimitri. Spectre warns that if the Legion discovers their secrets, many more lives will be at risk. Locke forfeits the argument and they they teleport into the lower levels of Haven.

At the Dark Legion's base; Knuckles, Julie-Su and General Von Stryker are suspended from the ceiling. Stryker complains about echidnas being traitors to everyone, even their own kind, but Dimitri tells him he'd never betray his race. Knuckles scoffs at the idea, remembering that Dimitri was said to have tried to enslave his people in the past. Dimitri argues that the government was trying to stifle progress due to old grudges and his brother, Edmund, was used by the High Council as a tool. He claims to only want to return Echidnaopolis to its former glory, but Knuckles doesn't believe him.

Meanwhile, Benedict offers Remington a deal while Pravda stands mindlessly nearby. Benedict explains that Remington could easily be replaced once he comes becomes High Councilor, but he could expect a lifetime position as Constable if he pledges his loyalty. Remington thinks Benedict is being presumptuous, but he explains that the election can easily be rigged. Remington asks what would happen if he decides not to play along; Benedict explains that Remington has secrets that he'd rather not have others find out and begins giving the Constable instructions on how to appease him.

At the Dark Legion base, Legion doctors sedate Knuckles and begin to prepare to brainwash him while Dimitri muses that he may find the secret to regaining his powers by seeing what made Knuckles able to resist him. Elsewhere in the base, Xenin stands guard over Julie-Su and Stryker, making jokes about how awful dingoes are. Meanwhile, Remington refuses to sell out to Benedict. The politician tries to escape and Remington chases after him, pulling Harry's cab aside and demands that he follow.

A Dark Legionnaire discovers, scanning him before the operation, that Knuckles is naturally producing energy from within. Dimitri wonders if Knuckles had been bio-engineered to be like a living Chaos Emerald when the alarm goes off. A Legion technician informs Dimitri that Knuckles' radiating energy is so powerful that it's destroying their systems and facility. He explains that they'll need to either evacuate or destroy Knuckles.

Harry drops Remington off in a back alley behind Benedict's campaign headquarters. Remington refuses to call for backup, unable to trust his own troops in the Echidna Security Team. Meanwhile, the Kommissar and Moritori Rex report to the main base on the status of Haven when they suddenly lose power. Moritori leads Lien-Da through the facility's corridors using his infrared vision when he's suddenly blinded by Spectre and Locke lighting flares. The duo is quickly apprehended and send gas canisters filtered through the vent system to knock out the other Legionnaires within Haven.

At the base, Dimitri orders his troops to evacuate. Xenin decides to leave Julie-Su and Stryker to die in their restraints, fleeing as well. Their base is revealed to be Benedict's campaign headquarters, and when Benedict arrives an electromagnetic discharge is sent through the city from within, disabling him and peeling away his organic disguise. Remington sees that Benedict is nothing more than a malfunctioning robot and frees Julie-Su and Stryker with Harry's help. He notices Legionnaires lying on the floor, unable to sustain themselves with the electromagnetic blast deactivating their cybernetics, and orders Harry to call for medical support.

Remington heads further within and finds a single room with working power. He finds Knuckles within, feeling exhausted. Knuckles asks Remington where Dimitri has gone, but he isn't sure. Meanwhile, Dimitri sits in his secret shuttle and watches the events unfolding outside on his monitors. He thinks to himself that they were still victorious, as the other echidna running for High Councilor was also a Dark Legion spy. He considers that he awakened a latent power in Knuckles and decides that the day's events count as a major victory.
